I have 6 oliver tractors and really enjoy reading over this website. Very interesting and informative. I know the 1850 has closed hydralic pump but never knew what that did instead of if it was an opeb one. Can anyone tell me the difference between open and closed pumps? When would one or the other be used?

*Open Center hydraulic systems, have a positive displacement pump that displaces a certain volume of fluid for each revolution that it makes. This means that the fluid must flow somewhere all the time the pump is turning. Open Center means that all of the components in the system must be open to allow fluid flow when components are in neutral. Systems must have a pressure relief valve in case of fluid flow blockage.
*Closed Center systems, have a variable displacement pump, producing a varied amount of fluid for each revolution. Closed Center pump output is conrolled by a pressure sensitive control. All of the components are closed when in neutral blocking the flow of fluid. When the system is started the pump will produce a flow of fluid, and with the components in neutral, pressure builds until the control causes the pump to "destroke" or quit producing a volume of fluid only of a sufficient to keep up with any leakage. If you live in a area where you have your own well for water system. All the faucets off, the well does not run. Open a faucet and pressure drops, and well starts. Same principal as the tractor Closed Center system.
*Your 1850 tractor has an Open Center system as do all 50 series.

The 1850 is open center and the 1855 is closed center.The open system pumps a volume of oil depending on the engine speed.The closed system pumps oil when the system needs it.
