Is there anything that I should look out for on an Oliver 1550 diesel? I've heard that I should stay away from the Wakesha motor, why? I know some people with 1850 and 1855 diesels with Waukesha engines and they like them. I might go look at one this weekend if the weather doesn't cooperate. Is this model something that I should stay away from?

How did it go with the 1550?

I can echo the other post. Bought 1550 gas new in 1970, very dependable, has almost 6,000 hours. Engine was freshened up around 4,500 hrs. Hydra-power (2-speed) still fine, though does have slow leak. I believe this is smallest model the Hydra-power drive was used in. Diesel may not like starting in cold weather too much. The 232 engine is dependable and not difficult to work on. The problems are on the larger, turbocharged Waukasha 310 D engines; the early series require some upgrades to the bottom end. The 1550 is rated at 53 pto horsepower, if that's the size you're looking for. Was available in row crop and utility models. The 1650/1655 is the same physical size as the row crop with 66 and 70 pto hp respectively.

These are very nice tractors. 1550 engine is basically the same Lanova injection, 4 main engine as in the 770's. Very reliable and quiet running. Check the hydra-power drive, they should be using Dexron atf (red), it should be slick to the feel, and not smell burnt. My 1555 (basically the same except for grille) has served us well since bought new in 1977, and is an exellent haying tractor, plenty of power and weight to handle large loads, but nimble enough to manuver in our small fields.
