There is an 1850, wfe, over under hydral shift with a cab and front weights that I am thinking of buying. Is there anything in particular to look for on this tractor? Do they have any particularly weak or strong points? It is in very good condition with only 5100 hrs on it and only 5 yrs on a complete rebuild. What would be a fair price for it? It is on the east coast if this affects the value.

I have three 1850's and the first thing you need to know is that the tachometer cables shrink and to my knowledge rarely worked so do not trust the hours on the gauge. The 1850 is robust and a durable tractor and is relatively repairable by todays standards. Parts are available from many different sources. Watch for oil leaks under the steering assembly below the radiator, these are a pain to redress. The PTO may rotate slowly even when disengaged but will stop if it see any amount of resistance. This is normal for 1850's.
The Perkins engine is great but can overheat and the head will warp so look so white smoke and open the rad cap to look for bubbles in the rad. This would indicate a possible crack in the head or leaking sleeve seal. The engine lugs very well at low RPM so put it under a load by going up a steep incline at low RPM and increasing the throttle. The tractor should pully strongly to speed. Black smoke is normal when doing this. Drive it down the road and check to see if the streeing fades left or right. If you need to continuosly correct the steering this will indicate the Hydramotor steering unit is leaking. They are very difficult to fix but can be replaced with other makes. I have never seen an 1850 go for more than $5500 Canadian dollars regardless of condition. My last one had a loader and I paid the equvialent of $2500 US.

I have a neighbor that has two 1850's with the Perkins diesel engines. He really likes them. He had a 1755 with the 310 Waukesha motor, but had a lot of trouble with it. I go to a lot of auctions and usually the 1850's bring $4-$5,000. If its extra nice, one might bring $6,000 on occasion. Hope this helps.

I have have not paid over $4500 for any of my 1850's. The on I paid that much for has 3500 hours on it. If that helps you out any.
