Can someone tell me what fluids I should be running in the Rearend, Trans, and Hydrualic on my 1850? I purchased some universal Trans/Hydraulic fluid at the local farm store. The fluid indicates it will substitute for White Q-1722, JD 303, J20A, IH Hy-Tran, and others. I had been running it in all 3 (rearend, trans, hyd), but will be draining them soon. Should I be running 80w90 in the rear and trans? Are there 2 drain plugs for the rear and trans or is it just the one under the axle?

Thanks,
Jon

My book says to use ATF in the hydraulics and hydra-power, and 80W-90 GL-5 in the transmission.

According to the operators manual , the hydradrive or over/under shifter on an 1850 runs on automatic transmission fluid , type A . I have heard it described by someone on this site as auto transmission fluid , "the red stuff . " I get mine from NAPA and it is labeled by NAPA as type FA . I could be wrong but I understand you want auto transmission fluid where the last letter in the type is an A . The hydra drive or over under shifter sits between the bell housing and the tranmission on the 1850 directly under the fuel tank .

The hydraulics on this tractor run on the universal transmission fluid you bought . There is an Oliver spec for the fluid ( I think it is Oliver 55 ) which I have seen on a lot of transmission hydraulic fluids . The premium transmission/ hydraulic fluid you can get at tractor supply says on the back it meets the oliver spec . The hydraulic fluid is added under the seat where there is a dip stick to check the fluid .

Again , according to the operators manual , the transmission and rear end on an 1850 run in gear oil . I use 80 to 90 weight oil . The gear oil is added at the back of the tractor on the 1850 . There are two drain plugs on the 1850 , one underneath the tranmission and one underneath the rear end . They are pipe plugs that you can remove with the end of a 1/2 inch drive ratchet without a socket attached . Underneath the transmission there is also a screen for the gear oil pump which you should remove and clean . It can be removed with an adjustable wrench .

Are all 3 manuals worth getting? I would guess the operators manual will list such things as where to change fluids and all the level check plugs, as well as capacities, which is something I have been looking for. I have an I&T service manual that is very handy and has been useful when I have worked on the PTO and overhauled the engine, but it doesn't give general info about fluid level check plugs and capacities. Is the service manual listed the same as the I&T manual? What is the parts manual good for?

Thanks,
Jon

Jon,

I have all of them and find them priceless. For routine maintenance, the operator's manual has all you need to know. The parts manual has detailed diagrams of all the parts with numbers so you can see at a glance exactly what part you may need.

In addition to the excellent info Sam gave you, you will need to replace the hydraulic filter and gear oil filter. And when you drain the gear oil, have a BIG pan under her. I think 8 gallons is the gear oil capacity.

A hint from my AGCO dealer. Never use JD or any other "manufacturer specific" type of hydraulic fluid in an Oliver. I use Farm Oyl "Ag-Master" hydraulic fluid which they recommend. Any good quality general-purpose hydraulic fluid is fine.

Any good quality 75W-90 or 80W-90 gear oil is fine in the transmission/final drive. There is a level check plug for the gear oil.

For the Hydraul-Shift, the terminology of automatic transmission fluid has changed recently. Use any good quality Dexron/Mercon fluid. This is what the old type "A" (GM) is now called. Just be sure to never use the old (Ford) type "F".

You're very welcome,

Ollie

I bought all three and have found them very helpul especially if you are going to be doing a lot of your own work on the tractor . If you have run Olivers a lot , you might get by without the operators manual because the service manual has capacities , specs etc in the front of the manual . Generally you can get a discount if you buy all three from what each would cost you seperately .

There was a service bulletin back in the late 70's that had you changing the rear end oil from 80/90 to the universal oil. We changed 75% of them back to 80/90 after the tractors that had a psi warning light wouldn't stay off with the universal oil.
Save your self some time and put the universal oil in the Hyd. and hydrapower. I've done 100's like this
