Did the 770 or 880 have any sort of gear splitter such as the 1600 hi-lo? The 1600 was my first Oliver and I can't find anyone around here that knows. Thanks for your help.
Carl

The power booster in our 880 worked fine. We used it for all kinds of farm work and shifted it often. I heard of some people having trouble with the 880. The 770 version was supposed to be better, as not so much horsepower applied to it. Again, I've had two 880s with power booster and no trouble with either.

Don't slip it in. When you engage it, stuff it pretty quickly in.

The 770, and 880 could be ordered with a power booster , it would lower your ground speed when pulled back.

earl,
I appreciate the info. Trying to decide what antique tractor to restore and/or pull. How tough was the power-booster compared to Oliver's later hi-lo which was very reliable as compared to IH's not so tough torque-amplifier?
thanks,
Carl

I had an 880 with power booster that worked, and Oliver dealer at the time advised that I use the clutch when I shifted it- said it would last a lot longer. I thought of it as sort of a super-synchro downshift/upshift, and it worked well.

I have a power booster in a super 88 Des., works great. it's a smaller shift than the farmall T/A, so less chance of overpower on the shift. It let a 60 HP tractor beat up on the 90/120 HP group (till they changed the rules) good luck

The power booster can't be that bad. We have one in our diesel Super 88 that we use only for pulling. It is running about 140hp. We pulled it up to the 14,000lbs class already. Haven't had any problems with it yet in the past 10-12 years. It probably hooks around 50 X a year.

The Power-Booster was pretty fragile, for an Oliver design

50 or so full-power shifts from high to low would trash the sprag (one-way clutch element) and then it would neutral when you down-shifted, until you pushed in the clutch and everything stopped, then it would 'grab' and give you low-range.

We finally just took the operating lever off Dad's, left it in high-range.

Carl, I do not know first hand how reliable the power boosters were, the 880 that I had with one on it was non-working, a friend of mine in Iowa has a fleet of them with power boosters on them, all of his work,he said if you take care of them they will last a long time. I priced the parts to fix mine when I had the tractor, was way to pricey for me. Getting to the IH T/a question, I did like that setup a lot better, we had a lot of Farmalls with the T/a setup on them, as long as you kept the T/a clutches adjusted, and used them with some sense the lasted forever. But to answer your pulling question, Oliver 880 is the way to go, I pulled my stock 880 with fantasic results.

Carl,
The power booster wasn't very reliable. Many were taken out. It just wasn't heavy enough to stand up. The hydra-power was much more trouble free.

Thanks for your insights. I needed some ideas from user/owners experienced with this tractor to help decide which tractor to set up to pull.
Best regards,
Carl
