Snap ring should show in photo. Cyl has been reassembled but snap ring between head and barrel is not yet installed.

To get it out, press the head into the barrel enough to release the ring so it can be pried out of it's groove. Start the ring out of the groove by compressing it using a punch in the hole near the end of the barrel. A screwdriver or ice pick should finish the job. This is not a bad job if the head is not rusted to the barrel.
