I occasionally see an Oliver 70 with two straight exhaust pipes, one forward of the normal one on the same (right) side. Is this original or somebody's modification?

They are a modification. As the post below stated, both ends of the manifold came together into one. My grandfather, the org. owner of my 70, had valve problems(sticking, burning, warping, take your pick). This 70 was often worked all day fitting ground, as they had an ample supply of manpower to run it. They took and brazed a piece on the manifold in order to run dual pipes, as well as cutting a crude hole into the hood for the pipe. It sounds real nice under load, but I wish the pipes were just a tad longer. They are at just the right height that they give you a headache.

Bruce , under the hood , on each end of the exaust manifold , is a casting. The muffler originally went between the castings , crossing the exaust over into one exaust pipe. Anyways , if the castings are shot , most people come up through the hood with two pipes , instead of crossing over into one. Maybe someone can explain this better than I.

I was told that Oliver made this improvement to help dissipate the exhaust heat better. They had a problem with cracked blocks and warped heads, valves going bad from overheating when being worked in the fields all day. That's what I was told, could be wrong but certainly sounds logical. I'm told it wasn't a stock option but more of an after thought to problems Oliver uncountered.
