dampener on the Perkinns 354 on the 1850?
You told me in an email that you thought there was some sort of trick with the key? Sure would like to have that info before I attempt my shadetree fix.. lol. Hope all is well out there in Oliverland-

Yes, there is some kind of a wedge in the center of that dampener, and you have to be careful or you will bust it taking it off. I can't remember how it goes and I was gonna look it up in my book, I will try to look tonight when I am in the shop and post back for you.

Does it have the three bolts holding on the dampner or one bolt. On the one with three, take a block of wood and a big hammer and smack it against the damner. THis will loosen it up. The other ones should just be splined fast and should easily pull off. I guess some had wedges with a single bolt too. Try driving the pulley rearward with a hammer and block of wood to get the wedge vibrated loose.

Sounds like the pulley on our milker pump. The pulley has a tapered bore in it, and it is bolted to a hub with an external taper. To loosen it, this hub has 4 threaded holes but the pulley only has 2, so the other 2 just use the same bolts to press the pulley off the hub. I just pulled a few gears and the dampner off my 1600 engine this weekend, and it was nice to find 3/8 threaded holes in everything so I could use that to pull the gears instead of using the gear puller and snapping them. Done that once before on a chev 283 and that sure wasn't fun.

Yup, that is the trick I was thinking of. I looked in my book last night and remembered, you have to take the bolts loose and move the dampener in until the wedge comes out, then take it off. If you try to pull the dampener off without taking the wedge out you will damage the dampener and have to get another one.
