will the pistons clear the crankshaft and come out through the pan or do I have to remove the head.

They won't come out even with the crankshaft removed. The skirts run into the main bearing supports in the crankcase before the tops of the pistons clear the bores. I was going to press some stuck pistons out the bottom using a hydraulic press... didn't work!

John you will have to remove the head to get the pistons out because there is not enough room to remove the pistons from the bottom and get them by the crankshaft. Good Luck Shadetree.

Also the head will have to be removed to install the pistons back in if that is the plan.
