Oliver 550 clutch

The 550 diesel I bought last week got put to work this weekend. It had 1849.7 hours when I got it and it's about 1860 now, all on Sat and Sun. I'm building a house in the foothills in California and have been using it to clean up the road and level/smooth the pad. It's doing a great job and has so much more power than an 8N!

Other than the minor issues I mentioned when I posted about it before the only other problem that's come up is the clutch. Anything above 2nd with any significant load, or taking off above 2nd on anything other than level and smooth ground results in major slippage. The clutch will slip well before the engine boggs down, that's for sure. I'm gonna try to nurse it through this current project by taking it as easy on that clutch as I can.

Now, when the time comes to fix this (soon) am I looking at any special tool requirements? Any idea what the parts will cost? Any recommendations for splitting it with very limited shop facilities?

The clutch disk is about $75 and the pressure plate about $125 with exchange. It's a very straightforward job except make sure that you use a clutch alignment tool to hold the clutch plate in place while tightening the pressure plate otherwise you'll never get it back together. Also, check sure that the pilot and throw out bearings are ok and also check that the grease hose is intact. A flexible grease hose from a grease gun fits nicely at only $5. Splitting tips provided by other guys are good but be very careful if using a roll under jack - that front section wants to rock on the pivot. Also, don't force the sections together by pulling with the bolts. It should slide in with some patience and rocking all the way up to the alignment pins on either side. Then it is safe to pull it together for the remaining 1/2 inch. Contact Rick's Agri Parts, Maibachs, Korves or O'Brien for the parts.

And while in there give the PTO clutch disk pack a good looking over. Those are expensive to replace but you only want to split the tractor once.

It doesn't hurt to get an I&T manual for your machine. You can find them on ebay once in a while for under $20.

Make a couple of wedges and place between the axle and frame to keep it from flopping sideways and then you can use a second jack under the rear of the frame - in case you don't have a overhead lift! And get that IT manual!!!!

The split is pretty straigtforward, but you should get an IT manual. No special tools needed. Its easiest if you suspend the front portion in a sling- if you try to just use a jack under it, it will flop over sideways when you get it unbolted, because the front axle is on a pivot. Use a husky floor jack on the back half, and roll it backwards to separate the halves.
