How many different engines, of what type, and CID went on the 1850 diesel tractors. Mine is a 1967. How do I know which one I have if there were multiple?

I've seen one with a diesel 310 non-turbo in it. Probably was a front half from a 1800 with a broken rear end, or a diesel dropped in place of the 310 gas. Tractor had all 1850 sheet metal and had been that way for a long time. Kind of backwards from Shep's use 1850 tubs for Cummins repowers.

Still, your 1850 should be a Perkins if diesel.

THe 354 Perkins were the only diesels used in the 1850. THey are very reliable.

From what I have seen stated in this forum and from what White dealers have told me,only one diesil engine was used for the 1850 model. It is a 354 ci Perkins engine built in England and sold under license to the White Corporation. Several other model i.e. 1700, 1755, 1800, 1855 1950-T used a 310 c.i. Wakesha engine. The 1900 and 1950? used a GM 4-53 2 stroke. The wakesha engines used Roosamatser fuel pumps and Perkins used a CAV pump mounted upright and sitting on a cast shelf on the left hand side of the engine. Because many of the sheet metal pieces are interchangable between models you may not be able to trust what is stamped into the side engine covers. Serial numbers will also lead you to the truth, others who frequent this column can help you there. Unless Shep got to this tractor and stuffed a Cummins engine into it those are likely to be you only choices.
