70 Crankshaft..Steel or iron?

I have a turned 70 crank that has .005 warp in the center. A performance machine shop several miles away tells me they can straighten it IF the crank is steel. They are afraid that if it is cast iron it will break.

No use in taking a chance driving several miles only to find out they could not straighten it. (Or worse, they straightened it and it breaks during use some time later.)

I suspect it is cast iron because I didn't see any wide forging marks on the unmachined areas. I need to know soon because I have to drive to the next county to get it back from one machine shop then drive 4 counties away to take it to the next machine shop. Whew.....

Your crank is not cast iron nor is it forged steel. I is a cast steel made at either Lakey Foundry in Muskegon MI or at the Hart Parr foundry in Charles City, IA. Either way it a ductile material and should straighten OK.
