77 Diesel Hitting On All Cylinders?

Is there an easy way to tell if my 77 diesel is hitting on all cylinders. I think I might have some major problems.

Change oil, with in 2 hours of running the oil is jet black.

Runs rough at full throttle, but smooth at half throttle.

Small puffs of smoke out of oil fill hole after warmed up well.

And how hard are these engines to rebuild, can't afford to hire someone else to do it. I have rebuilt small gas engines but never a diesel.

Thanks Rob

I'd check the filter first. Sounds like that would cause the dirty oil and poor running full throttle. It may also be a combination of conditions. I'd start at the filter and continue through the injector system.

these guys covered it pretty well try all the diagnostic methods start with a compression test it will tell you inside the cylinders condition do the infared theremometer and check the fuel system for dirt/plugged i would buy a repair manual as it will give you most of the specks and show how to test i would look into the valve train also again a good repair manual will help isolate the problem instead of hit miss

I'd use an IR temperature sensor on each exhaust port

the one that reads lower than the average will be the prime suspect

In addion to the other good advice, is look for a "wet" black under an exhaust port. Also an old mechanic taught me to feel the energy cell caps with the back of a knuckle to feel the difference in heat. It you've got one of the non-contact thermometers it would be better, I learned the hard way to be very short with my "feel".

Simplest way is to have it running (at a speed where it's rough) and unscrew the fuel lines at the injectors, one at a time. It'll have the same effect as pulling plug wires one at a time- when you unscrew one and it has no adverse effect on the running of the engine, you have found the problem cylinder. Probably an injector. It does concern me a bit that it is smooth at half throttle but rough at full- somebody help me here, but isn't that more indicative of a worn pump (big $$) than injector (littler $$)? So far as rebuilding, you can disassemble, but need to take the block to a shop for machining and fitting of pistons- then you put it back together. Still won't be cheap, but less than having the shop do it all. You can run a compression check- need special adaptors from a shop. Also, look for blue smoke that won't clear up when its warm (oil blowing by rings) or white smoke (water present, or just plain low compression and worn parts).

These old diesel engines run alot better on #1 fuel. Found a fuel conditioner to increase the c-tain {octain in diesel} helped very well .
Do you have a bunch of crud in the fuel tank or lines? Plugged filters?

how often do you use it? has it sat for long times between use? do you run a fuel condesioner? I have a older ford backhoe i use and without condesioner it runs ruff after setting, I borrowed it from compeny , it about 3 tanks before it ran good.
