Looking for a way to low gear this little machine to make it more useful for Dozing.I know about the model A ford conversion set up.More interested in keeping the machine very close to original. Thinking in the line of placing a gear reducer in place of the coupler yoke(between the clutch and transmission.Anyone with information on what I can use and where to buy.Please include phone#'s) Thanks very much fellas, Glen,email SHELLY.GLEN@att,net

I have seen a setup with a chain drive arrangement. I would question the use of a chain drive in this application. Low tooth counts on chain sprocket result in excess vibration and I would not recommend using chain drives at these line speeds. I would look at something like a Gates GT or Eagle Pd toothed drive belt. I have used these in winch designs and they transmit a alot of power at much higher RPMs, although the Gates design in somewhat noisier. I would also worry about the overhung radial load applied to the shafts since the original setup using U-joint which do not place a large overhung load on the output and input shafts. It might be wise to looking at designing a jackshaft with bearing supports to eliminate loading the output and input shaft radially. Commercial gearboxes are available however they are hard to find in low reductions. I would think you would want to limit the initial reduction to 1.5:1 ir 2:1 at most.

If you read the thread by Mike Anderson you will find that is exactly the problem he had---and for the reason you just stated. I had not thought of a toothed belt, but it sounds like a better way to go. I know Mike has some thoughts about redoing his, I'm not sure if he has given that approach any thought.

Glen- The HPOCA article is the Model A conversion- shows how to make a bell housing out of a piece of round pipe to adapt the two. I'm at work so can't tell you which issue its in.

I believe there is a write up of a conversion, on the HPOCA board, on this very subject. The guy may well have put on information as to how it worked out, but I thought it may have problems with axial/radial loads. Assume you are considering this for an OC, not a Cletrac HG as the early ones may not have enough support on the final drive shafts to allow too much slow speed torque increase without risk of mechanical overload.
