1850 battery question

My 1850 came to me with a bad voltage regulator.
It also has a group 27 12 volt battery instead of the 2 six volt batteries. The farmer I bought it from just turned off the key whenever he ran the tractor, to save the battery. I want to get it fixed, and want to know if the tractor can be changed to 12 volt.

The bigger battery is in the upper battery box.
The battery cover is missing. The battery sits too high to safely use the cover over it. I would like to use 2 smaller twelve volt batteries.

My question is: Is it possible to use 2 twelve volt batteries instead of the 2 six volts ones? I figure that it would take some rewiring to do it. I'd like to keep the same volt batteries on all our equipment, makes it easier to switch when needed. The 1850 is the only thing we have that uses 6 volt.

What are the pros and cons with this idea?

The biggest disadvantage to two batteries in parallel(2 12-volts) is that if one battery goes bad, especiallly an internal short, it will wreck the other battery. When you have 2 bats in parallel you should always replace them in pairs. With two 6-volt in series you can often get away with replacing only the bad one and still get a couple more years out of the other one. If you want to try a 12-volt batttery, why don't you just install only 1 of the highest rated, best quality batteries that will fit your space like Larry Md said and see how it goes. If you can get by with only one bat you will be way ahead.

I have both types of battery set up in my 5 Cockshutts. I have personally found that using two 6 volt batteries seem to last longer than using two 12 volt batteries. I try to get around 1000-1200 CCA in the 12 volt batteries and usually they only last two years. The tractors with the 6 volt batteries have lasted up to 5 years and typically hold charge better than the 12 volt. The only clear benefit to using the 12 volt batteries is it getting hard to find HD 6 volt chargers and when my current one is done I probably switch the remaining beasts to a single high quality, high cranking amp 12 volt.

I use one 30H 12volt battery in mine.But its not as cold here in MD.The whole tractor is 12 volt so the battery cables are the only thing to change.I like haveing fewer connections to get loose and cause trouble.

What is a 30H battery? The group 27 that is in our tractor now is too tall for the compartment. Also- can I buy a good voltage regulator for this 1850 from anybody (Napa, etc.) or do I need to go to Agco?

One more thing- do you know where I can buy a battery compartment cover?

I would say look in there and see if something has been added to the bottem.a 27 or 29h or 30 should fit fine.The 30h is the same one that fits in the under platform box.

NAPA will sell you a "Standard VR103" regulator. Same one was used in GM cars for many years.

I did that with my 1850, and am running 2 12 volt batteries. I put two 12 volt Optima gell filled batteries in the upper battery tray, turned them sideways, strapped them down, and made new cables for them and it works great. All you have to do is hook both positive poles togeather and both negative poles togeather and hook it up to the starter moter like it is now.

As to the pros and cons of 6 volts vs 12, I dont know that there is a lot of difference anymore, I have some tractors that run two 6's and some that run 2 12's and they both seem to do well. The 6 volt batteries cost less to put in and seem to go bad faster as a general rule, but I have has some 12's that died too early too. I would say use whatever is most convient for you and whatever you like.

I liked those gell filled batteries, they dont leak acid, and they have a long warrenty, but I think they were too pricy for what they are, and probably wouldn't jump to use them again.

In response to pros & cons of 6 verse 12 . Two 6 volts { hooked in series } will crank faster than parallel 12's , but a shorter duration.
A series setup is only as good as the weakest cell or connection .A parallal setup has a longer duration.

Thanks again Shep- I was hoping that it would be a reasonable refit. Still have not done the water pump and vibration dampener. Other chores taking priority.

I have both the water pump and dampener if you need them. They were both on my 354 Perkins when I changed it to a Cummins. Let me know if you need them.
