1855, worth?

Hi all, I just deliverd a load of hay to a guy about 40 miles away, and he had an 1855 that he wanted to sell/trade. Ok here is what I seen, its a late 1855, hydraul over/under, tires on back are about 20%, tires on front are about 60%, paint is about 25-30%, it didnt have a seat, but did have a loader(miller). Well when it starts it sounded fair until he put it into gear, then it had a terrible knock coming from the engine, smoked worse then a freight train, hyds. sounded fair except for a squal ever now and then from the filter area. The only way it would start was with either, so I figured the knock was a rod or piston slapping around in there. Engine was coverd with dirt, grime and grease on the left side, and clutch let out on the very end of its stroke. My question is with the description I gave you what would this Ollie be worth? I'm in need of a project tractor and thought that maybe if I could get this one cheap enough I would go with it. Should I offer him anything for it, or trade him out the $500 in hay he owes me? The loader is like new, I think the loader is worth more then the tractor and he only gave $2450 for the loader 2 years ago. The wide front is in good shape, no waelds break or cracks, the sheet metal is fair, for the most part. It was set out at maximum width on the front, and it had cast hubs on the rear. I think I might buy it, but not sure. Are the rebuild kits high for the 310? Hows their reliability? I dont think the block is cracked or been repaired. I want an Ollie but I dont want to get in over my head either. Whats my posibilities for repowers? I figured Shep would get in on this as this is right up his ally. Thanks for the help, it'll be next weekend befor I know whats going to happen of guys. Thanks again!

John~ If the block is good, you got a good starting point. I first thought you found a really rough tractor, but yet it does sound like it has some work needing to be done. As for the engine, you have 3 options. I have seen WFE's 1950T with the 310 in it. If you have the engine properly rebuilt, its a good engine. He kinda convinced me the 310 isnt as bad as our personal experiences. The 5.9 Cummins is a great engine to put in there also, but costs sometimes can get up there. My friend is putting one in a 1755 and he has over $7,000 into it so far. Another option I have seen is putting the 6-354 Perkins in. That is a very good engine too. I guess you can see what is best for you and if you even want to tackle the project, but if the block is good, I'd make a fair offer. If the loader stays on, your price will be more, of course. John 2510 3020 that 1855 from the way described sounds a little better than salvage price depends if the loader is any value or enginge block is not been repaired.if thats the case you could give a little more. I might be interested in it if you are not call or email 502 222 9055 Terry Clubb

If its got a good wide front and good sheet metal, your load of hay for $500 would get you a steal. That tractor sounds like its in pretty sad shape:( I'd say buy it up for your load of hay
