Were the early Whites just an Oliver with different sheetmetal or did they have different engines, drivetrains, etc. If so for how long?

White 4-150's were 1855 rearends and hyd's 4-180's were 2255 rearends and hyd. I think 2-150 was a 2255 rear end and a MM engine. 2-70 similar to 1655. 2-85 and 2-105 were 1855's with perkins engines. 2-60's were like 1365 olivers, 2-135, 2-155 and the 2-180 were for the most part new designs as was the 4-210. with major hyd and drive train improvements. other than the 4-150 and 2-150 the rest were good tractors. I have a 2-135 fast approching 9,000 hrs great tractor. The 2-155 and 2-180 rear end designs survived untill the agco 8x10 series tractors Thats how tuff they are.

Yeah, for the most part they are the same. The 2-85 is about the same as an 1855 with the perkins 354 non-turbo, like what's in the 1850's. The 2-105 has the turboed 354 perkins. the 2-70 I believe is about the same as the 1655. Dont know how long they ran these models but they are very good.

I can add a little more. The engines are listed as 354 perkins in both old and new models but they are differant engines. None of the gaskets and most other parts will NOT interchange between the oliver and white model perkins engines. The whites allso take differant wieghts on the front and the frame is sculpted to take the new wieghts. One other thing is there is no big heavy frame protecking the radiator and front of the tractor on the white.

What were the ones called "American" and about what years were they made?

The White Americans were made from 1989 to 1991 and transitioned White from the Oliver based designs to the new designs, just before the AGCO era. The design of these tractors began by White-New Idea in 1987, and they were to be in the tradition of the Oliver 1550. They used the Cummins-CDC four cylinder engines that were also used in Case-IH tractors and Case construction equipment. They offered 60 and 80 HP at the PTO. They came in MM yellow, Oliver green, Cockschutt red, and White silver. They were tested in Nebraska in 1990. I have never seen one, but they were supposed to be good tractors.

The American tractors as far as I am concerned are junk. Only good thing is the engine. Poor hydraulics, poor brakes, uncomfortable and loud to name a few!!! AS far the front wieght bracket someone mentioned my 2255 weights will interchange with any White on our farm. It depends on the year of Oliver tractor. Just my 2cents. Marc
