Oliver 1555 Hydraulics

My Oliver 1555 is leaking hydraulic fluid out of the sump or reservoir into the transmission and differential when the tractor sits for a few days . The leak is somewhere between 1 to 2 gallons over a week and then it stops . The leak is definately into the transmission case because it is not on the outside of the tractor and the gear oil has hydraulic fluid mixed in with it judging by thickness of the oil and smell. The tractor does not lose hydraulic fluid when running even when used for a few hours . My thoughts are I have a small hole in the pan or in the gasket that seals the top and the pan probably around the metal that divides the transmission from the bull gears , pinions etc . . A leak on either of these is the only way I can see hydraulic fluid leaking into the transmission case when the tractor is not running .

I have taken the top off , checked the pan real good and there are no leaks in the pan so the only thing I can see is a leak in the gasket probably at the front of the pan . I have gotten new gaskets and am going to put the top back on this weekend . Am I missing some other place where the fluid could be leaking ? Are there any areas on the top that if broken or worn would cause the gasket to leak ? Any ideas on tightning the bolts that hold on the top to make sure the gasket seats tightly and properly ? (I can find no tightning pattern or torque specs in any service manual ) . Any ideas on how to check and see if I have a good seal ?

Check the pan very close had one did same thing. There is a little rectangle shape plate attached to the pan with 4 spot welds and 1 spot weld broke and the oil would very slowy go into rear end.

I know the spot you are talking about . We checked this area very carefully and it appears okay . We filled the pan up with gasoline and no leaks at all . I think it must be the gaskets . I cannot see a bad front seal on the hydraulic pump leaking down when the tractor is not running . Fluid would have to go up through the pump take up , work its way through the pump and then out the front seal and into the transmission which seems to me would be really hard to do . Plus with the tractor running I am not losing fluid , the pressure on the pump checks out fine and the hydraulics and steering work fine on the tractor .

Right now the tranmission and rear end have been drained of all gear oil and the plugs are out . I think I am going to put on new pan gaskets and put the top back on , fill it with hydraulic fluid and let the tractor sit for a week or so in the shop with empty pans underneath the two transmission/rear end drain plugs . If there is no leaking , then maybe I have the problem fixed as far as pan and gaskets are concerned . If I have leaking and it comes out transmission drain hole it would seem there is a problem with gasket or pan in the area of the metal piece of the rear frame that divides the transmission from the rear end . If I have leaking and it comes out drain hole at back of rearend most likely explanation is hole or crack somewhere in the pan . Anyway that is my thinking on how to proceed .

The hydrolic pump actually sits in the oil when its on the tractor.The shaft probally wont leak much if its not running,but the gasket between the pump and the case will leak when its not running.I have seen this gasket sucked into the pump intake when the breaher gets plugged.

Thr dealers allways claimed this was caused by the pan being cracked.It can allso leak at the front of the pump.We had a 1650 doing that and ran it a couple years with the rear oil leval up high.You would think you could see it go down when it ran ,but the oil was so high in the rear below that it didn't seem to work that way.Check the gasket on the front of the pump and its high preasure seal

my bet is that your hydraulic pump is shot. the only cure is a new pump!
