77v.s. M farmall

I have a 1951 oliver 77 rowcrop. what do you think has more pulling power in the field, the oliver, or a farmall M. If there weight is set up the same, and there both in good-running stock condition.

Farmall H: 24 horse on PTO, 20 on drawbar (1939 gasoline) weight 5550 lbs

Farmall M: 34 horse on PTO, 24 on drawbar (1939 M on distillate) weight 6770 lbs

77 Oliver: 32 horse on PTO, 25 on drawbar (1948 on LPG) weight 4670 lbs

88 Oliver: 41 horse on PTO, 29 on drawbar (1948 on gasoline) weight 5285 lbs

Unfortunately, tractortips doesn't have specs for engines on the same fuel. What surprises me is the difference in weight! The Farmall H weighs more than the 88!

I am a Farmall man because I grew up that way, but I have been reading up on Oliver and have operated a Super 77 gas, Super 88 diesel, 1955 diesel and 1755 gas. Oliver built quality machines with higher power levels and more features before JD and IH. But why did IH sell over 400,000 H's if they were an inferior product compared to the Oliver? I don't know production numbers on the Olivers, but I know they are lower than IH. Case is also another strange example, the SC and DC were good tractors but just didn't compete with the IH. Even JD didn't sell as many tractors as IH either.

To each his own, all of these tractors are excellent pieces of history to be preserved for future generations. They all did their part in making the US number 1 in the world, and many continue to do so today.

The "M"s are a great tractor and have lots of power, they were sold mostly up against the 88 not the 77. In stock form for raw pulling alot depends on the weight you put on. At 5500# my 77 will most times outpull an "M" the super "H" is more of a challange. However at 6500 and 7500# the "M"s are superior. IH put several different transmissions in the "M" and the low speed unit has just goobs of torque for feld work. The 77 is a far handier tractor, live power, live hyd. and it is just more nimble and responsive. My super 77 is even nicer than my 77 and with M&W's has a load of power.

Funny, I have a Stock M , a stock 77 and a stock 88. Since I hav never weighted the 77 up to the M I don't know how it would do but with both stock M and 88's my 88 will leave the M about 15-30 ft behind on a track. Of course it could depend on what you mean by stock too.

However if I remember right the 77 was rated for 2-3 plows and the M was a 3-4 plow tactor. Might be wrong on that one though but it seems that is what i read. On a track I would say either is good if you know how to set each of them up.

If all else fails just get a Moline..LOL!!!

The M will likely outpull the Oliver but: The 77 has 6 speed transmission,(big plus) and LIVE pto (bigger plus. The 77 will do more work than the M. If the price is reasonable, buy both and do a direct comparison. Then keep the one you like best. There is a market for both.

I have used both and will say that the M will out pull the Oliver..... because it is heavier and I think the M has a TA on it.. so it basically has 10 gears...

The Oliver however will out do the M in just about anything else except Hydraulics...

I dont know what kind of dope you boys been smoking but you dont even want that M Farmall in the same field or track as an 88 Oliver! 77 is more of a comparison to the H Farmall (a Joke) if you can call that a comparison!

When i was looking for a tractor to make hay with a few years ago I wanted an M Farmall, but settled for an Oliver 77 with M&W pistons. I still have it but recently I did get a Farmall M. The M can pull more becuase it is heavier. I was surprised to find that the Oliver has quite a bit more power. The live pto and live hydraulics make it a pretty hard to beat tractor.

The 77 would be the better choice by far, the horsepower to weight ratio, six speed vs five speed, more hp, and personal observations at antique pulls. The olivers tend to pull better stock than do anything else. my .02:)
