Is the 3150 Caterpillar engine in the 2255 Oliver a good engine? How does it compare to the 3208 Caterpillar? What years were the 3150's put in the 2255?
Thanks,
Greg Davis

The 3150 was used it 72' and 73' then the 3208. I have a 3150 powered 2255 4 wd. The 3150 is one of the better engines oliver used Starts good and runs great. I was told by several cat mechanics that a 3150 will far out last a 3208 for various reasons. I've never had any trouble with my 3150. You will find many prefer the 3208 as it was capable of much more power easily. In either engine it is best to change the berrings at or around 3,000 hrs. I use mine alot and then some. It is my main tractor for every thing. From my experiences I warn you do not turn it up if you want it to last any amount of time. first you will shell the 3 speed and following not far behind 3rd, 4th gears and a whole lot more. They are at or past there design limits at factory HP. It is extreamly expensive to repair these idems. If you only plan to pull it or very few hrs you probably have no worrys turning it up unless it's already worn out. But don't expect good service from it putting 500 hrs on it year in and year out at 200+ hp. I really like the tractor. good luck

The 3150 is the same basic engine design as the 3208, but smaller (573 cubic inches) and has the earlier number designation. In the mid 70's Cat changed their designations of diesel engines so that the 3145-3150-3160 family of V-8 engines were called the 3208 and had a 636 inch displacement. They were a good engine, widely used in lots of applications, mid-range trucks, fire trucks, etc. and were certified for full tractor-trailer duty in city peddle applications. They were a parent-bore engine (non-sleeved block)but had replaceable exhaust valve seats. The 636 cube 3160 was used in Ollies in 1974, but was called the 3208 after that, in '75 or '76. hope this helps

I am looking at a 2255 with the 3150 engine , it has a problem getting water in the oil, it is never very much but it gets there. I was told that they used o rings for head gaskets and this is most likely the problem followed by a cracked head etc. The oil cooler has been removed and the heat exchanger checked . Also was told the oil cooler base could be defective. Any thoughts on this? The tractor looks nice overall.

According to a '70's Caterpillar 3100 series brochure, the 3100 engines used a one-piece head gasket and as they did not have wet sleeves, no o-rings there. But, having said that, the head gasket, cracked head, or oil coolers could still be the problem. Also maybe a warped head, especially if it had been overheated at some time in the past. Good luck, and just my $0.02.

Yea, I have lots of thoughts. I purchased a 2255 4 wheel drive with a 3208 in it for a modest price as is from a dealer. When I looked it over I noticed all the blue silicon around the oil cooler, but was told everything was fine. We didn't use it much the first year, but had it overheat once for no reason. Problem got worse the next year with us getting milky oil and trying to fix the oil cooler. Went a whole year with the problem being on and off. Turns out the oil cooler was fine. What we found is that depending on how hard we worked it and whether or not the radiator cap sealed, (it was in rough shape) we would get water sometimes and then we would not. Local diesel repair shop pulled the engine and presurize the coolant side only to find water seeping past the sleeves. Was told the engine was shot. Good news is that I now have a 210 hp rebuilt engine in a used block. Really kicks butt.
