I have read the posts about the cavitation and sleeve pitting problems with the 310 diesel. Would this also be a concern with the 283 diesel? We have acquired a White 2-70 diesel that runs good, 3100 hours, but I know the coolant hasn't been maintained. I was thinking of changing to either Rotella premix or John Deere premix. These seem to cost about $6.50/gallon. Is this a good idea or is something else recommended?

Hal, cavitation is an issue with any wet sleeve engine.
There are a number of ways of protecting the engine.
The most common is to simply add the additive and maintain the correct residual. It is not a big deal and the additive and test strips can be obtained at any good auto parts store or truck dealer. I get mine shipped from Diesel Injection Service in Dallas TX. They have a web site and are good people.
You can also add a filter canister that contains the additive and that you can get from NAPA, as well as others.
I have not used the premixed and remain a bit skeptical---or is it old fashioned?

Some wet sleeves are more prone to this than others. Internationals seeme to be especially prone. The DT 466 and DT360 which are fine engines have a history of this. Even the parent-bore Navistar V-8 blocks used in Ford pickuips have a history of this. AT my old work, we went thru three blocks for an '88 Ford IDI until we found one that did not pit, and I have a wet-sleeve from a DT360 that had tiny pin holes in it. On the other hand, has anyone heard of cavitation pitting in a wet-sleeve Detroit Diesel 53 series like that used in the Ollie 1950?
taking care of the coolant helps, that is why the IH's have coolant filters and conditioners. just my $0.02
