How to distinguish 770's from 880's (row crop)

This is a two part question.
1. Can you tell by either the specification number and/or serial number if a tractor is either a 770 or 880?

2. In the case where the serial tag is missing, are there any distinguishing features between a 770 and 880 (other than the decals) that set them a part?

A quick check of the rear axles should clear things up. Don't quote me on the actual size, but I think the 880 has a diameter of approximately 2 3/4" and the 770 is about 2 1/2".

Both mine have 38" rears (770 & 880).

I have wheatlands ...770G has 16.9 x 30 ...880D has 18.4 x 30

Although the book says 38" rears are available for both , the "770" tractors I've seen usually have 38" and the "880" tractors 34". Just one thing to look for at quick glance.

#1: In the specification area, 770 number before the - is either 37, 47 or 247. A 880 will be either 38 or 48 before the dash. The first of the last three digits in the serial nunber will be a 7 for a 770, a 8 for a 880.

#2: If they are early tractors, the crankcase will have a identifier cast into the crankcase near the carburator or injection pump side that starts with a "M" for 770 or "K" for 880. All 770 had spur gear transmissions as did the early 880 (through S/N 73 638). Later 880 had a helical gear transmission. The transmissions have different shift patterns. The 880 could have a filter under the LH platform if it has had a lube package installed.
