Mark,

Carburetor Cold Parts Cleaner is a dip-type solution that works great on carbon, however it is a bit pricey. The last time I checked, it was available at NAPA and came in a 2 gal. pail with a basket to put the parts in. About $35.-$40. Be advised, it is very nasty to work with. Be sure to wear hand and eye protection when working with it.

I have heard that soaking the parts in a strong solution of Lestoil and hot water works also, but I have never tried it.

Good Luck. Scott

Since I didn't get a response right away, I asked my son. He said to use carb cleaner. Then I remembered the dip and soak type of carb cleaner we used years ago. I found product at Fleet/Farm over the week-end, but at $13 or $14 a gallon, I have my reservations as to the performance. It came with a strainer basket in the can and I'm dropping the parts in tonight. I'll let you know how it works though, and thanks for the advise!

I went to the NAPA store yesterday to pick up some parts, so I checked on the carb cleaner. They had a 1 gal. can (no basket) for $19. and a 5 gal. pail w/basket for $89.

I did not ask them if they could still get the 2 gal. size.

The stuff you bought will probably work fine. I find NAPA's prices to be high anyway.

Another alternative is to have the parts hot-tanked. Any auto machine shop/engine rebuilder should be able to do it for minimal $$.

However, be advised that hot tanking is caustic and will sometimes attack aluminum and lead/babbit parts.
