Do all 1850's have the Perkins diesel? If not, how do you tell them apart ?

Thanks for all the info. The reason I asked,I have been looking for a bigger tractor and it seems like the 1850 is where you can get the most bang for the buck.I grew up on allis and JD so don't know much about the Olivers, but everybody I ever talked to that had one liked it.I seen one the other night either on machine finder or machinery links (I looked for it again tonight and can't find it) that in the picture it had the exhaust coming out the left side of the hood.I thought the perkins had the exhaust manifold on the right side, but didn't know if it had a crossover pipe or what.It didn't say if it was a gas or a diesel, but it must have been a gas. Thanks, Joe

All Oliver 1850 Diesel tractors had the Perkins 354 engine. Oliver 1850 Gas tractors had the Waukesha 310 engines.

The exhaust pipe/mufflers are on opposite sides. Perkins is on right hand side.

The way I understand it all the diesel 1850 tractors ran the 354ci Perkins. Some of the later model 1850's right before Oliver switched to the 1855 did get the 310ci Waukesha someone once said, but I have never seen one and dont know if that really happened, but I guess it could have. I dont think a Detroit was ever put in an 1850 unless someone repowered it, the Detroit diesels were in the 1950 and 1900 tractors.

You can tell an 1850 from other tractors by the model number on the seriel plate, or by the vertical fuel pump that the Perkins engine had, that is the only Oliver tractor that had a vertical fuel pump that I know of.

I've never heard of waukesha diesels being used, but if memory serves me I did hear that they updated the perkins in the later models. Went from something like a doc 3 to a doc 4, I have to apologize if i said that wrong because i've never seen that term spelled before and i'm assuming it's doc. I think the 4 is similar/the same as what is in the later 2-105's. I don't know exactly what the differences between the two motors are.

All of this sounds like a question for BA Star who generally knows the answers to these historical questions . The fuel pump Shep is referring to is , I believe , the high pressure injector pump which is located on the left side of the engine viewed from the drivers seat . My 1850 also has a low pressure "fuel supply pump" located on the right side of the engine just before the primary fuel filter . This pump has a priming lever you could pump with your thumb to help bleed the filters .
