We took delivery of our 1850 yesterday. I knew that the water pump would need rebuilding. The previous owner gave us a new Agco kit for that.

The tractor has good oil pressure both at idle and at higher RPMs. While going over it I noticed that the harmonic balancer was wobbling along with the fan. I suspect that the harmonic balancer has wobbled for some time. Maybe the balancer put a strain on the water pump and caused it to wobble?

What is involved in the repair of the balancer?
Will I need a machine shop to install the water pump kit?

I don't plan on using the tractor until this is fixed. Don't want to tear up the radiator if the fan gives loose, or worse.

I am waiting for a shop manual to arrive. Any advice or 2 cents worth will be welcomed. I don't know much about this tractor, or much about Olivers in general.

There are a lot more questions I have on this tractor. I'll hold off some until I get this first repair figured out. Sure will appreciate any suggestions. I don't claim to be any sort of mechanic. Mike D.

The balancer has a thin layer of plastic holding the two pieces togather. They are very easy to bend or break so they wobble. They can allso be twisted which weakens the plastic. The pully can allso wear on the crank so its no longer tight. The crank can allso be bent causeing a wobble. You need to investigate this before it gets worse.

Never worked on harmonic balancer before . Have rebuilt the water pump on my 1850 and I believe we used a press on one part (either to take old part off or putting the new one on ) but I am not sure it would be required . Installation of the pump itself back on the tractor is fairly easy . Check all the hoses while you are there including the ones going to the engine oil cooler . If the tractor has a hydradrive unit between bell housing and drive sproket going into transmission I would check / replace hoses going from water pump to oil cooler on top of hydradrive unit . You can use car heater hose for those hoses . If you are using any kind of gasket maker or sealent when you reinstall the water pump make sure it can take high temperatures . The Perkins diesel on the 1850 can develop some high temperatures on certain parts of the block .
