I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I am wanting to build a 2255 puller but I didn't know what rear end to use (2255 or 2155). They both have outboard planetaries but other than that I don't know the differences. Are the housings the same size? Are the internals like the bull gears, ring & pinion the same? Since the 2155 turned about 1000 rpm less I am presuming that rear end was not slowed down as much. Was this done through the ring & pinion or the planetaries. Since I am building a puller I want to wind up with the lightest rear end possible but I need to turn the wheels fast enough. Do you know if the ring & pinion and the planetaries are interchangeable between the two. Where would a 2-150 rear end fit into this mix? Is it similar to the 2155 or is it different again? Did the G955 and the White 1870 share this planetary rear end as well? I was on that V8 Ollie puller web site and it shows a rear end of a tractor being built at the Oliver assembly plant but it is of a 6 cylinder tractor (probably 2155), is this what I should expect the 2255 rear end to look like?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the help guys. We pull up in Canada and are thinking of building a super farm style tractor and we want to get it down to 7000 lbs or less.

Use the 1750 or 1850 rearend, worked well on the one I pulled. Weighed 7900 with the tub and no hydraulics and a narrow front. The next year we built a tube frame and put the cage on lost down to 6500#. We ran the over/under worked well up to 600horses don't know how well it would do if you ask for more. I think u would need a slipper clutch if you build much more power. Past experience my what a teacher.

You don't want the 2155 rear and transmission. The 2155 has only 5 gears and a big space between 4 and 5th we can pull our 2155 in 4th with the torque ahead anywhere with enough power, but there is a big jump to fifth gear. The axle housings are a lot heavier on the 2155 than the 2255 or 2-150 which are the same rears. The Oliver rear and trans you will have six gears and each gear will overlap the other with the use of the torque. If you don't want to use the over/under, top speed should still be about 16 MPH. The 2155 and 2-150 were governed at 2355 RPM's and the 2255 was at about 2600RPM's so the engine speed isn't that much of a change. We have both a 2255 (3208 Cat)and 2-150(585 MM) and both go about the same speed, of course the 2255 doesn't run over 2400 with a load on it.
The 2255 rear looks exactly like the one in the picture at the factory. If the rear has hyd. brakes and hyd. operated PTo it is an oliver. The 2155 had mechanical brakes and PTO. I believe that the MM 955's didn't have the outboard planetaries. If you turn your engine hard enough at about 4,500RPM's you should get close to 35Mph+ wheel speed. The internals I don't know if they are exactly the same, but I doubt it. I would use a 2255 or white 2-150 rear if you want the outboard planetaries. Don't look at the bull gears inside though. THey might change your mind. THey are only about 2 inches wide, but keep in mind they aren't under as much stress as what you might think. Again the 2-150 and 2255 rears are the same and the 2155 is totally different. The 2155 is actually just a G-1350 Minne MO. You won't find many 2155 Olivers. Just 210 made that say Oliver with the 2155 designation. Hope this helps and doesn't get you too confused!

A 2155 is a Moline tractor totally. A 2255,2-150 White and Moline G1355/White 2270 all have similar Oliver planetary rearends. What type puller are you building? Modified? WB.
