Newbie Question about Transmission Oil in Super 77

I'm a new owner of a 1955 Oliver Super 77. It's in working order, but I'm trying to fix it up from it's current condition and keep it maintained. I'm starting with rust prevention and lubrication.
Here's my question. I've got an operator's manual which lists the transmission oil as 4.5 gallons of SAE 140 gear oil for above freezing operation. In my search of local shops today, I couldn't find that available. I found SAE 90 GC-1 oil, which was listed in the manual for below freezing. But what I found the most were brands of "Heavy Duty Tractor Hydraulic and Transmission Oil" without SAE specs. It appeared from the description that this type of stuff was appropriate for my tractor (which is to use the same oil for transmission, final drive, and PTO). But I'm completely ignorant about this, and thought I might find someone with a little more experience on this forum.
So, can I use the modern "universal" Hydraulic and Transmission oil in my tractor?

Gilbert , may I also say , What WFE is saying is not wrong. Many people still use the gear lubes. The gears will be a little quieter. I'm just saying that Oliver did recommend switching to 10W-30W motor oil for year round use , as you can see from the page I had sent you from my service manual. 10W-30W is what I use. In the hydraulic reservor , use universal hydraulic fluid. Which is 10W motor oil with additives. 10W or any other weight motor oil is motor oil. Once additives are added to enhance the motor oil for hydraulic systems , the name changes to fluid. Regular motor oil will work just fine. I would , and do use universal hydraulic oil in my hydraulic system.

You can certainly use the 90 weight gear oil in the transmission and final drive housing of your new Super 77. Have a 55 Super 77 as well (green wheels). I do like to use, however, an 85W-140 multiweight gear oil (which is the equivalent of the 140 called for by the ops manual) in the transmission and final drives because the higher viscosity oil provides considerably quieter operation of the transmission. Thinner oils will make the howl or whine in the transmission from the straight cut or 'spur' gears more noticeable and annoying during operation, and since the Supers just use a splash lube transmission, the higher viscosity oils work just fine. You can find the 85W-140 gear oil at any major farm store or it can be ordered as it is widely available. The hydraulic system on the Super 77 is a self-contained reservoir and the multipurpose hydraulic oil will work fine in that reservoir. 10W30 motor oil is just as good as the hydraulic pump is nothing but a big oil pump. Hydraulic oil does have some additives for anti-cavitation properties and such, but motor oil works fine. Congrats on the new Super!

You want to use 10W-30W motor oil in the engine and transmission. Never mind the gear oil.
