I saw a 1959 880 gas with power steering. The power steering pump was mounted on the back side of the generator. The owner said the pump was original. Is this true? Also, the hood had a 1 1/2" diameter hole in it located approximately near the front of the generator. What is the hole for? Thanks.

Later PS units used a seperate pump (not on the generator) mounted high on the right side of the engine, and the hole is the access for the fill. Late (square fender) 770's have this set up. It sounds like your hood has been swapped, as no one (except a restorer) would prefer the generator mounted pump over the remote pump.

I was reading the above comments of power steering. I am looking for a power steering that hooks on the back side of the generator, and also the two cylinders attached to the front wheels. I need them for the Oliver 550 gas tractor. Where can I purchase these items? What do you think they will cost. Thanks Wayne Curtis

MY DAD HAD A 880 DIESEL AND IT HAD THE POWER STEERING ON THE BACK OF THE GENERATOR.SEVERAL YEARS AGO THE SHAFT OUT THE BACK OF THE GENERATOR BROKE OFF SO WE TOOK THE POWER STEERING OFF. IT DROVE ABOUT THE SAME WITH OR WITHOUT. IT ALSO LEAKED ALOT WHEN WE HAD IT ON. AS FAR AS THE HOLE IN THE HOOD,CAN'T HELP YOU ON THAT ONE.

looks like somebody had gone to the trouble to restore it to its original condition, AFTER it had the 'improved' PS system put on it.

the upgraded system had a filler tube for the new pump right about where you indicate

Dad's had the old when he bought it, now has the new..... both leak (leaked) bad really bad.

Yes , my 1959 Oliver "770" has the power stearing pump on the back of the generator , and it's factory. The newer "770" tractors have the pump located in the area above the water pump , but off to the side a little. The Hole???

Steve, I just checked my pictures of a 59 880 that I sold to a man in Tenn., there was no hole in the hood where you are talking about, as far as factory power steering goes, factory P.S. was mounted on the back side of the generator, it should also say power steering on the center of the steering wheel. If you need any pictures, or questions answered email me. Where are you located at anyway ?
