Oliver 77 governor problem

I am hoping someone on here can help on this one. I bought a 77 yesterday that although it didn't look real good it ran good except that it wouldn't go up to a high RPM. I figured it was just in the governor adjustment as that is what happened to am 88 I have. When I got everything set by the book and started the tractor it went wide open even with the throttle setting at idle. After adjusting things and checking everything I tried to get the slack out of the throttle rod even though my others have it. What is happening is that on my others when I start them the governor rod that the throttle and carb attach to will move forward to the idle position. On this one I bought it doesn't,just sits back about 1/4-1/2 inch. You can push it forward with your hand but it will work back.

I am sure it is something inside the governor but am not sure what it is. I have one on a parts tractor I can swap out but wanted to hear from the folks on here first to see if it is something simple that I am over looking.

Had same thing happen on a Super 77 last year. The thrust bearing in the governor went out and all the rollers/balls dropped down into oil pan, fortunately missing the timing gears. But you can drain oil and if you find small steel balls, you've found the problem. Or remove governor housing and inspect. Not too bad. Either way, good luck. After replacing the $6.00 thrust bearing, good as new.

Are bearings available through White? Last time I tryed they wanted to sell the complete spool assembly .

Well, I think so. Unless the one I got was new old stock. I did get it from a dealer who had them in stock so who knows how old they were.

If the dealer doesn't have them that is ok, We have a bearing supply store in town. they have come up with some odd ones before on a few tractors and motorcycles so maybe they will come through again:)

It sounds like a bad gov if you take it off it is not hard to fix.
