My Oliver "770" is a 1959. Power stearing pump on the back of the generator. It is 12 volt positive ground , which I shure most of you know. Anyways , it is my understanding that the system has to be switched to negative ground in order to use the Genessee electronic ignition system. Is this a fact. Has anyone ever tried the electronic ignition system with positive ground? RESULTS? Can my positive ground generator be switched over to negative ground? If so , I'm guessing switch battery cables , wires on coil , repolarize generator. Would this work? Or does the system need alternating current by useing an alternator? My power stearing / charging system work just fine. So I would like to keep the tractor as original as possible. Thanks , Scott

You will likely need a different regulator. They are marked for pos or Neg ground systems. Try the old one first with the instructions. It won't hurt it. Just may not regulate as good as it should.

Genessee sells different versions for positive or negative ground, just tell them what you have when you order. I put one on my John Deere M with positive ground and it works great. I haven't had any problems with the ignition on my Oliver Supper 55 so I'm just going to leave it original for now.

The alternator output is DC, switch the battery to neg gnd and the coils + to ign switch and - to dist. The generator may need a different regulator, some one else will have to answer that one. Electronic ignition is a great upgrade.

Scott - Forget about running electronic ignition on positive ground...results = SMOKE!

However it's simple to change your existing electrical system to negative ground. Need to:

1 - Swap all the wires on the two terminals at backside of the ammeter.

2 - Swap the two primary connections at the coil.

3 - Swap the cable connections at the battery.

4 - Repolarize the generator: After the previous steps are complete, simply jumper the GEN (or ARM) and BAT connections at the regulator for a moment. Do this with the battery connected and the motor stopped. Soon as you get a spark you have repolarized.

That's it!
