Oliver 1650 advice

I am in need of a second tractor for pulling a disc and lime spreader as well as other things. I have a FWA TN 65 with loader as my primary tractor and the Oliver I am looking at is 2wd w/loader so I would probally take that loader off and sell it. Are there any problems that I should look for that are common with the 1650's. I didn't check to see if it was a gas or diesel yet as I wanted to know what to look for before I stop and talk with the guy. How do the 2wd front axels hold up over time with the use of a loader, is it something I should worry about? Thanks for your time.

I have "heard" that the old style 1650 front axles will break if you put wide tires on them, especially with a loader. The fix was to upgrade to a newer front spindle assy.

However, I have a 1965 model 1650 with 9.5 tires and a loader and I load it regularly with >2000 lbs and done so for 2 or 3 years and have not had a problem. She has slightly more than 8000 hrs on her and has been worked very hard all of her life and is on the second engine. The first engine was overhauled at 7200 hours.

About the only poblems I've had with this old girl is the PTO always wants to spin when it's off (unless there is a load on it) and the brakes were bad when I got her. The brakes were easy to fix but need to stay adjusted properly to keep them from locking up, and I haven't addressed the spinning pto yet. From what I read, the PTO issue is very common and I don't know if I wish to waste my money fixing it. It causes me to shut the tractor off each time I hook up a PTO Shaft and in my book, that should be manditory anyways.

I can't give you any advice regarding the front axel holding up under loader use with the 1650, however I have found my 1650 to be a very useful tractor. If you do buy this 1650 and want to sell the loader please drop me an email as I'm looking for a loader for my tractor.
