Need paint removing tips

I have a 770 the has several layers of paint. How is the best way to remove it from the sheet metal? I plan to sand blast the cast iron (axles,engine block ect.) Thanks in advance for your help!KM

I will tell you I got some great advice from the deere board. Use Corn starch, lye and water works great. Take a cup of lye 2 quarts of water mix in corn starch to it becomes like jelly. If done right you will feel the heat coming off the mixture. use paint brush to paint it on. wait 15 minutes paint will run off with a wash of water.

Super 55 is correct. DO NOT sand blast sheet metal. Been there, done that, got the replacements parts to prove it.

I would use Aircraft Stipper. It is made by Kleen Strip (best as I remember) and it does an excellent job.

To help strippers work their best, keep the parts in the shade. Sun light cause heat and that dries the stripper out too fast.

To get to the lower coats of paint quickly, use a knife and score the top coats of paint. I make a series of lines resembling a checker board all over the metal. The more lines the better. This allows the stripper to get under the top coats rather than having to soak through them. Really increases the speed and lowers the amount of stripper needed. Don't worry if you accidentally score the metal, the new primer will cover the cuts quickly.

Another trick I use is to rough sand the surface of the old paint with a 36 or 40 grip sanding disk. Don't worry about doing a nice job, just rough up the surface as deeply as you can.

I wouldn't sandblast the sheet metal. It could warp it. I always go down to the local rent center and rent a steam/pressure washer. About 60 dollars for a half day. It cuts right through old paint and grease and anything else that gets in it's way. I clean all of my tractors up this way and have had great results. There are some hard spots to get though, sometimes a little paint is left. For this I use an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment. Get the brush where the wires are wound into each other, the crimped kind come apart very easy. This won't hurt the sheet metal and it is fast, easy and effective. It takes about 2 hours to clean an entire tractor if the everything is off of it.

I've been told not to sandblast sheet metal. You could distort it. One product I have heard mentioned is aircraft paint remover.

Oven cleaner, Oven cleaner and more Oven cleaner. :) It will strip the paint right down to the metal in no time. Don't get the good stuff though, the cheap stuff works better:)

You are going to sandblast the heavy stuff before you tear it down and rebuild it, Right? If you aren't going to do a rebuild keep the sand away from the engine, axle seals and input shafts.

Oven clean helps.

While cleaning up my steering gear of years of rust, crud, dirt and ancient grease, I tried soaking in real hot water and detergent mix. On top the old woodstove. It cleaned everything and the paint was melting like crazy. Does anybody else have any experience or potential trouble with this method? It really wouldn't take too big a pan to hold most sheet metal and smaller castings.

Well, you can sandblast it, or use a good stripper on it to get the first few layers off of the sheet metal, depends on how big of a sand blaster that you have, how much sand that you want to use, lot of variables there. Email me if you need anything answered.

Earl are you the "paint any car, any color, any time for $29.95" Schieb? When preparing sheet metal with the original paint I have found nothing that will touch it. I use the sand blaster with silica sand and hold the nozzle at least 1 ft away. Using a 3 sided tarp/tent most of the sand is saved. The lye/oven cleaner does nothing but make a caustic mess. Also my blaster maintains about 70-80 psi when in use never had any distortion etc.

I would recomend Aircraft Striper by Safety Kleen. Just did a 60 with this and took a while 8 hours the primer was thick and I am a little picky and had to have all the paint off. You can get an airesal can for about 5 dollars and a gallon for 20 at Autozone. We washed it off with a 3500lb pressure washer and did a great job. This beat all the hours and sand from the sandblaster. I had no problem with sand balsting other than the time and the sheet metal was fine you just have to wet sand the primer,
