my father farms, and he just purchased an 83 or 84 4-270 for $18,000 out of North Dakota. It has no 3pt, but it has a pto and four hydraulic remotes& 20.8x38s. It has 4900 hours on it. This particular tractor is in next to incredible shape considering its 20 years old with 5000 hours. Can tell that its been well cared for. It has the 3306 inline-6 Cat...has a much better reputation that the 3208 V-8. WE just sold our 4-210 that had a 3208, with 4500 total hours and 2000 hours on an engine overhaul. The engine was leaking oil, and the over under-direct had gone out, and it wasn't worth fixing so we sold it to a mechanic for $5000. The tractor was not great, but it probably would of faired better if we hadnt tried pulling as hard with it-pulled dmi 530 and it couldnt handle it, nor could it handle a white 28 foot disk w/ harrow. HOWEVER, the 4-270 has no problems pulling, and it is considerably heavier than the 4-210...30,000 vs. 22,000 dry. Compared to John Deere and Case tractors of its time and size, it is supior in most ways...although it is quite heavy for sping tillage because of compaction. We were thinking of a steiger st325 or versatile 875, with a cumming 855 (NOT 903 v-8, as they were bad) but decided not to because of A) no pto and B) they lack powershift

The 4-270 is an awesome machine. I drove one before when we were thinking about buying one. It has a 4gear X 4 speed powershift trans. It weighs in at 30K without any ballast. 3pt was optional and probably PTO but are available with both. The 4spd powershift was not jerky and shifted really nice. It also has an electronic dash with readouts of pto, engine and ground speed. IT has around 300 gallon fuel capactiy. The engine is a 3306 Caterpillar that can easily be adjusted to above 300 ponies with a turbo and aftercooler. The cluch is a wet disc clutch. The tires were mostly 20.8X38s. I would still like to get one but time will tell. This is the largest 4wd tractor white produced in that era until the Agcostar's come out. However White made a 4-325 with a 3406 Cat in it at 325 HP. Three were only produced and one only still exists and is in Indiana I believe. Not many were built, I believe from 83 to 88 I believe were the years with none being built in 1985. Looks like less than 3,000 were built.

the 4-270 didnot have a clutch, they had a spliting valve with a transmission brake that worked like a clutch.there were three 4-325s built and all are still in use.one was in ohio and the other two are in iowa.they don't have the orginal motors in them because cat owend them and kept them when the tractor was not produced.the figures i can find there were less than five hundred 4-270s built.i have worked on one and they are a very uneck tractor.

The book I have shows that the 4-270 was produced in these years and the # built
year #built
83 - 59
84 - 803
85 - none
86 - 19
87 - 19
88 - 24

924 total

The book also said that the 3, 4-325's that were built that only the one still existed in Iowa. It also said that the original 3406 engine was replaced with a 3406 truck engine.

The book I have could be wrong but these were the figures I looked at and misjudged slightly. Also how easy is it to get parts for the 4-270 and how well built were they as far as longevity.

Very dependable and over-built tractor. Best with the cummuins motor over the cat motor.

Options were slim, 3 point,PTO, and a radio was about it.
Never saw 1 with a Cummins, but the cat was a good engine
