Does anyone have any information about the bolt on engine oil coolers used on the first 1855s?I am wondering if they helped

I don't know that there is any scientific evidence to back it up, but, yes, I believe they did help. Back then, the 1855s were largely still primary tractors on the farm and did a lot of hard pulling in some pretty hot and adverse environments. Those factors, coupled with the 310s small oil capacity, meant rapid deterioration of oil quality. The add-on oil cooler helped this situation, but did not represent an entire cure. I'm not sure that today the oil cooler would be as necessary as it was back then, because most 1855s today do relatively light duty compared to their role 30 years ago. And, if one uses it responsibly, changes oil every 50 hours, and keeps the engine's cooling system working efficiently, an 1855 without an oil cooler should be just as good as its cousin with the oil cooler. If you have one and it doesn't have the oil cooler, I say just use good oil and change the crankcase oil every 50 hours.
