I am having to put new o rings in my 310 motor this Saturday. I am wondering what kind of lubricant do you put on and around the o ring? Also what are the new rod bolts and can I get them from the agco dealer. What do they run? Thanks

I bought 14 of those rod bolts one month
ago it cost me 116.00 dollars US at the white dealer

You can use a number of different lubricants for the o-ring installation. Just don't use anything petroleum-based. I usually use Crisco. Also ensure the sleeve top and bottom counterbores in the block are not pitted, out-of round, or too large. The new updated rod bolts for the 310 are available from the AGCO dealer. You will get 12 new rod bolts and 12 flat washers as well in the package. If memory serves, price is under $10. WELL worth it. Make sure you use a silicate additive in the antifreeze for electrolysis prevention or buy Fleetgard Complete which already has the necessary additives. Good luck. Don't forget to tighten head bolts above spec and long live the 310.

Thanks for the info WFE. Now I am wondering how much do you torque your head bolts down to? Also could you post a picture of your 1950-T. I would like to have a look at it. Thanks

I've never posted a picture on a reply but I tried to cut and paste the address of a picture of my T into the "Optional Image URL" field of this reply, but I don't honestly know what it will do. Otherwise, I did post a couple pictures of the T in the Tractor Photos Gallery at the left of the screen under Oliver. It is a 1968 model 1950-T.

The Oliver service manual cites a torque spec on the heads of the 310s as 180 ft*lbs on the inner capscrews and 133 ft*lbs on the outer 4 capscrews (the front 2 and rear 2 head capscrews). But the 310s will fail head gaskets on occasion if one is not careful. I torque my inner capscrews to 215 ft*lbs and the outer 4 to 155 ft*lbs. Then retorque head after 20 hours or so. Works especially well when you might plan to turn up the fuel and torque screws on the pump, which you can do once properly overhauled. I also use a product made by Permatex called Hi-Tac sparingly on the head. It also increases gasket retention and helps to reduce chance of blowing one. Good luck and maybe you can tell me how to post a picture if I didn't get it right.

the torqueon a 310 with 5/8 head bolts is 133# for the end head bolts and 210# for the 10 inner bolts. i don't recomend over torquing, but am a firm beleaver in retorquing after warming the engine. we also use hylomar top and bottom on gasket and antiseize on the bolts.

Let me clarify my statement in the previous reply.

Using a lubricant on the threads before you torque a bolt changes the friction of the threads. Each lubricant has a friction coefficient that greatly effects the amount of clamping force or bolt stretch encountered with the same amount of torque applied to the head of the bolt.

Clean, Dry threads have a coeffeicent of 1.0 meaning that the given torque will preload the bolt the proper amount (if the specs were given for clean, dry threads). Neverseize has a coef. of 0.16 which means if you apply the same torque to the head, you will stretch or preload the bolt a heck of allot more (to early for math). 30 wt oil I think has a coef. of 0.85 and so on. There are numerous charts on the internet that will demonstate the above.

We have charts we give our mechanics that have the formulas already built in for each bolt size and each (common) lubricant so they can adjust torque accordingly. We can effectively use this to our advantage by using this scheme for a torque multiplier, less effort to produce the same effects.

If your not a firm beleiver in over torqueing head bolts your already doing it. Look at a torque chart and compare. I don't have mine in front of me and these numbers are not accurate but I'm just trying to give you and example.

Base torque (Wrench setting) Lubricant Actual Torque

100ftlbs dry 100ftlbs
100ftlbs oil 175ftlbs
100ftlbs neversieze 250 ftlbs

Again- this was for comparison and not actual values.
Lubricant makes a huge difference and changes the actual torque value allot. If you have your torque chart, you can actually use a lubricant as a torque multiplier.
