Was told I could change PTO from 1000 to 540 by Loosening bolt at bottom of PTO housing and pulling are pushing Barrel bolt mech..do I also Remove and turn PTO shaft around?

Close, but you need another stub shaft. Can't quite turn them around as I remember.

Or you can do like I do, I have an adaptor you can put on the 540 shaft that has 1000 splines on the end. You can get them at most farm stores for about $50. I do have to lengthin the drawbar out one notch when I do this to make everything work right.

One thing you have to know, before you can change it from 540 to 1000 RPM you have to have the stub shaft pulled out. There is a safty button in the back of the unit that moves out when the shaft is removed and ONLY then you can shift the unit. Found this out the hard way after I bent the shifting forks in the PTO unit trying to make it shift.
