I'm going to look at 1650 that's for sale. It doesn't steer. Any quick diagnosis? $?
thanks

We bought a 1655 that didn't steer. I jumped the gun and bought a used Charlynn steering motor. Upon farther inspecton, we found the yoke off the steering shaft on front was stripped. MUCH cheaper solution! I still have the steering motor if you need one

What is the tip on locating steering parts for an Oliver? Need a working telescoping column or parts to fix one?

the first thing that i would do is check the priority valve. it is located on the left side of the hydraulic unit. there is a spool in the valve that will sometimes stick. symptoms are steering but no hydraulics or hyd but no steering. cures a lot of them and costs nothing!

I'm having similar problems with my 1800: soon as I start 'er up, she starts turning left. Can't stop it. Repair guy says I have to replace entire unit at +-$1000. Would 1650 problem and solution be similar?

Everybody,
The price was right, so we'll be bringing the old girl home. I've wanted an Oliver for thirty years and now the fun begins.

Where's a good source for a Char-lynn valve unit? The QF&F and Central Tractor stores in my area have all closed.

thanks
Tim

You are asking a real tough question . Could be major problem like bad hydraulic pump , bad steering motor underneath the dash , or bad steering cylinder at the front of the tractor , bad steering by pass or pressure relief valves , each of which would have their own problems and expenses . Replacing the hydraulic pump would probably be the most expensive . Do the other hydraulic driven systems (the 3 point hitch and remote valves ) work ? If they do not work that would make me lean toward a bad hydraulic pump or problems with one of the main hydraulic valves . I have also heard about the splines being worn on the pto drive shaft (which also turns the hydraulic pump ) and this causing the hydraulic pump not to work.

Sam,
The PTO and 3 pt were working. The owner believes it's the steering motor below the dash.
Is that a common problem?

Yes it is I have replaced 3 with charlin steering valves. One time I tryed a rebuilt one it failed after 200 hours. One time I replaced the seals myself and that one exploded hot hydrolic oil all over me 2 months later.Thats why I like to replace with charlin. The charlins allso steer easyer and you don't have to constantly turn the wheel to keep going straight.

The pto on the 1650 is manually started and the pto runs off a splined drive shaft that goes into the fly wheel . A set of splines part of the way up the shaft turn gears which drive the hydraulic pump . The splines which turn the hydraulic pump can be worn and the pto still work so I am not sure how much the pto working tells you about the hydraulic pump . The fact the 3 point hitch wokrs would seem to indicate the hydraulic pump is working and pumping fluid . Do the remotes work ? When you pull back on the remotes does the pressure relief valve make noise which would indicate the hydraulic pump is working ?

I have not run into a steering motor that completely failed but have rebuilt two that were weak and leaking oil . AGCO sells a seal/o ring rebuild kit if that is the problem . You may be able to find a used parts dealer that would sell you a rebuilt one or contact someone on this web site . The Steering motor is fairly easy to get to and remove once you remove the sheet metal and the diesel/gas tank . I have not had any luck trying to get to the steering motor going through the dash .
