Bought farm and inherited a 770 gasoline tractor which sat outside along fenceline uncovered for several years. Engine stuck, no surprise here. Pulley, and fly wheel will not turn by hand. Looked through YT archives, and tried all the "fluids on the top of the cylinders" suggested. Latest attempt to free it up was yesterday. I jacked up the right side, put it in 5th gear, filled the cylinders with diesel, started rocking the elevated tire back and forth. Took a break (several hours), and resumed. Shortly after starting the rocking motion this second time, the tire turned. In changing from 5th to 4th, to 3rd, etc., it is progressivly harder to turn, BUT does turn. THE PROBLEM is that the pulley and fly wheel still do not turn. Did I break something by turning the jacked up wheel? Or is there something I'm missing? I'm not a mechanic, but I do know some of the basics. At this point I feel pretty lost. If no one has any additional thoughts, I'll have to tear the engine down and do it the hard way. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, especially if they help me avoid the engine tear down I've tried to avoid.

Try pulling the power booster lever rearward? In forward it freewheels downhill.

Mark;

I may be wrong (it's been quite a few years!) but doesn't it freewheel forward in the rearward (Power-Boost) position ?

Regards,

G

According to the original owners manual, "To shift into low drive position pull the Power-Booster Drive control lever back; to shift into normal drive position push the control lever forward." "The Power-Booster Drive control lever must be in the forward drive position when descending hills to utilize the engine as a brake and maintain the tractor under control." Hope this helps.

What you probably broke loose was the brake discs. If it sat outside without moving the brakes would rust up and the brake pinion is what turns the bull gears. If your 770 has a power booster (lever to the right of the steering column) make sure it's forward, in high range or you can't turn the engine as the sprag clutch is over-running.

Hey IanC, thanks for the input. Would your response still apply to these additional facts - I had to pull it out of the weed overgrown area it had been in. I had the 770 in Neutral and it rolled without any problem since it had been on an incline, once it started rolling I did have to brake and steer it into a workable cleared area, so both the steering and brakes worked. Also, during the roll, I put it in 5th gear and slowly let the clutch out and the rear wheels locked and slid on the damp ground for about 6 inches, I immediately put the clutch back it and braked to a stop in the area I had previously prepared to work on the 770. The 770 does have a power booster (to the left of the steering column), and when the jacked rear wheel was freed up it was forward. Thank you for your input, any additional assistance would be appreciated.

Sounds like you've freed up the clutch, but if the flywheel and pulling arent moving your engine is not turning over.
