Detroit power boost

Pulled the engine out of the 995 I'm rebuilding last night and got to wondering; Is it possible to boost the HP of a Detroit Diesel by changing the gear drive of the blower to increase it's speed and increasing the boost pressure? I'm just wondering if any one here has ever heard of or seen this done and what would be involved in doing it. Thanks

Tom, on Yahoo groups is a "Detroit Diesel" mailing list. It has some fellas who know these engines pretty good. You can go to www.yahoogroups.com and look for Detroit Diesel one and look at postings there. OR, you can join and they come to you in email as posted. Have to join to post your own message. Also, try www.deisel-central.com for all brands. Very good site,mostly for newer types tho. I have a 3-71 from a 52 GMC truck, that I may get into someday. These are strange machines for sure!

Tom, I have a good friend that retired from Detroit and he has taught me quite a bit about these engines. There is no power gain with a 4 valve head, Detroit went to this because of a cracking problem with the 2 valve model. The pistons that you will want are the high compression type and the sleeves are the large port type, these parts are for the "N" series. I would get some 9G90 injectors, these work very well and will give the crowd a little smoke show if you choose to pull it. There is talk of different blower drive gears but we have not had them in hand yet so I will not say one way or the other. Find someone that has a dial indicator to set your injectors because a GOOD tuneup makes all the difference in the world.

It's not entirely correct to say there is no HP gain with the 4 valve head. Maybe you meant to say at the original rated RPMs there is no HP gain. The 4 valve head does not really come into play lower RPMS. But starting at about 2000 RPMs the 4 valve head does make more HP. The more RPMs you run the more the 4 valve head helps make HP.

Nice project Tom. I have been told that there are no diffenent gear drive sets for the inline engines. I also have one gentleman that says he has a gear that is one tooth faster that will work and it is a Detroit part. I can see if I can get the part number from him. I think some of the serious pullers are having custom gears made.

I don't know how much power you are looking for but going to a later set of cross head pistons and liners will help a lot. Find a good Detroit mechanic to make a recomendation are there are several port configurations available in the liners. This is similar to changing intake lift and duration on a regular engine. Other changes you may want to look at are chaging to a four valve head. Sending the superchagrer out to have it rebuilt and having teflon sealer strips added. Go to N sreies injectors, you will have to experiment with the size. You may wind up advancing the cam if you start putting a lot of fuel in. You should reduce restriction on the intake side with a low restriction filter system. You will need the mechanic to set up the rack for the injectors. This is very important on how it will run.

I am sure others will contribute more suggestions.

Thanks for the info A.P. I think I will look into different liners and injectors since they need replacing any way. (The tractor sat so long that the liners are rusted) Tinkering with blower drives sounds like a lot of work for little return. Next weekend I am starting on taking apart the rearend and transmission. The tractor sat in a shed about 50 ft. from a road that has had dump trucks rolling up and down on it for the last 25 years. I think all of that vibration has flat-spotted all the bearings in the rear end. It sounds like a popcorn popper when you roll it around. Oh well, at least I can get bearings cheap through my workplace. Just need to keep reminding myself, YOU ARE DOING THIS FOR FUN AND ENJOYMENT!!!
