What engine is in this tractor? How reliable were the 4x4 2-85s? What is the ptp hp? ANything else I ought to know pro or con? Thanks-

The engine in the combines was closer to the 1850 engine than the 2-85. Most of the 2-85's we sold ran over 100 pto hp after break in. The Clark front assist has very few problems as long as they've kept it full of good oil. The selling point for Oliver/White front assist is there is no torque limiter in the front drive train as with other makes, you can put ALL horsepower into front end.

I have had some experience with the White 2-85. it is a good strong tractor, with closed center hydraulics a la John Deere, and the Perkins it has is one of the better tractor engines. It has about a ton more iron than the 85 HP tractors of most other makes. You can get good parts and service support for this tractor In my area, (northern NY), The local AGCO dealer and the local JD dealer in my area both give good support. The 2-85's were available with MFWD to make a four wheel drive, altho as Shep says, the true White 4-wheel drives were articulated. Don't use ether to start the Perkins in the White. I saw the results of this in someone else's 2-85, not a pretty sight, bent rods, and a $4,500.00 overhaul bill. Best of luck with your 2-85 and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Maybe I am mistaken but I thought there were no 4x4 White 2-85s . I thought the number 2 in the model number indicated that the tractor was a two wheel drive . Others may say different though .

No that is incorrect, the 2- stands for a normal 2 wheel drive tractor with or without front wheel assist. The 4- in the white numbers means it is an articulated tractor or a true 4 wheel drive with all 4 tires the same size. There is no such thing as a 4-135, it is a 2-135 with front wheel assist.

The 2-85 tractor used a 6.354 perkins engine. thats a 6 cylinder, 354 cubic inch. These were a good durable engine. I run a repair business and have overhauled a couple with over 9000 hours on them and used standard size bearings.
The fwd units and pretty much the same, very low maintenence. My father has a couple 2-135's and they use the same front axle, and they have never given us any problems.
As for anything else, just be sure if you purchase this tractor you properly use the pto they way it was meant, or you will be fixing it.

as far as I know it should be about 85 hp. As far as the 354 perkins, I think it's the same basic engine as our 8900 white combine except it's turboed. Very good running engine.
