Can anyone tell me the good and the bad about the 1850 Olivers. I am looking at a 1850 gas.

Thanks,
Andy

I have a 1850 with the Perkins deisel, with cab and dual loader. We use it around the yard for chores. One bad thing is it leaks hyda fluid from the rear drive seal. Hydraulic pump is slow when using the loader. We have a very special model, has a/c and heat. Depending on if the windows are open or closed. Problem is, the a/c only works in the winter! :)

Your hyrda power seal is not a hard fix but you do have to pull the engine out to fix it, dont let the hydra power get low in oil or you can burn it up. If I were you, instead of fixing it I would swap it out for an over under direct, hydral shift unit and have three speeds. It will bolt right up, and the later 1850's had that option.

Also if you are running the loader off the remotes on this tractor it will slow the hydraulics down, try putting a loader valve on the tractor and hooking on to the power beyond hydraulics and it should work faster. If not you may have a weak pump.

I think I have a cab like yours too :-)

Well, I may as well chime in here too. This is my 1850 Oliver/Cummins tractor, with a 5.9L Cummins diesel at about 145HP. In my opinion the 1850 was one of the best tractors Oliver ever built, it pulls good, handles good, rides better than an 86 series IH ever thought about, and is very dependable. Add the power and tork of a Cummins power plant to an already good tractor, and well I can't get off of it.... Great tractor, you cant go wrong.

That's a fine looking Ollie you got there, Shep. Nice job with the Cummins.

After 35+ years of using an 1850 gas, about the only bad thing I have found is it's thirst for fuel. Figure on burning 8 - 9 gallons/hour on a hard pull. Other (minor) problem is the tendency of the carb to ice up in cool, damp weather. However once the motor gets fully warmed up the icing problem goes away.

Aside from the above the tractor is a pleasure to own. It never seems to break down, starts reliably in the worst conditions (extreme cold), pulls good (with a little added weight in the front it will pull a 6 x 16 plow in 3rd direct all day and never break a sweat), and is easy on the operator.

I've got an 1850 gasser and I like it real well! It is a powerhouse, but it does like fuel if you really work it. I pull a 9ft NI Cut-Ditioner with it in heavy hay and the 1850 plays with it. Same machine behind my JD3020 works its tail off. Most parts are readily available, but the Holley distributor can be a problem, but I understand it can be replaced by other more readily availble makes; mine is still the Holley system. All in all, I like mine.
As they say, just my $0.02 worth. - Farmer Tom

An 1850 has 92 certified h.p. This is a great tractor for field work, but not an ideal tractor for chores. Parts for this tractor are easy to get, and several older mechanics know how to work on them.
