I recently bought a 77 rc diesel and no matter what I do to it, it refuses to start until I've cranked it for at least a full minute. Needless to say this does my battery no favors whatsoever.
I can use ether to speed up the process, but I hate to use it too often. And once I do get it started, it absolutely refuses to restart upon shutting it off. I've changed the fuel, the filter, added injector cleaner and everything else I can think of to no avail. I love bush-hogging with the old gal but man is she stubborn. What can I try?

If your injectors are not atomizing correctly it will be hard to start. It is fairly easy to pull the injectors out and have them tested for pattern and pop off pressure. The nozzles themselves are replaceable, and the pop off is adjustable. While they are out do a compression check also. You can also pull the energy cells out of the other side of the haed and clean them out, oven cleaner will remove the carbon.

I have seen this caused by the injector pump being out of time with its self.Or it could just be out of time with the engine.

This was my experience with a 1655 D. It was always a pain to start cold, but around 3 or 4 thousand hours, got to where it wanted either with warm termperatures, or even after just running. I was told the Roosa Master injector pump needed an overhaul, which I thought was too soon, but did it anyway. It did solve the warm starting problem, plus ran stronger. Hope it's something less expensive for you, good luck.

What did your injector pump rebuild cost if you don't mind me asking? I want to brace myself for that possibility if that turns out to be the starting problem with my new 1650.

Pete: We are looking at two different fuel injection pumps here. The 77 will have an American Bosch pump that will be far more expensive to rebuild than the Roosa Master. If you are going to spend money on rebuilding the pump, you should look at moderizing the fuel filters. The glass "Master" filter used on the later Olivers and other brands are far better filters than what was made 45 - 50 years ago. I have the current Stanadyne filters on my diesel like used on the current JD tractors.

Pete,
I don't know what it would cost now days, as this was 20 years ago. At that time it was $300-$400 to get one rebuilt and properly set up on a flow bench.
