Bought a 1650D

I thought I had bought a 1550 gas earlier this week, but that deal fell though, which I am pretty happy about since later I found out nobody kept that tractor very long because it is such a heavy drinker. Yesterday I went to look at a 1650 diesel and ended up buying it. Seems like everything works pretty well on it. Only concerns I have about it is it starts a little hard (did not need any ether to start, 60 degrees and raining, but took about 20 seconds of cranking) and it seems to have a little miss at high RPM, which the owner thinks has to do with injector pump timing. I haven't had much experience with tractors this big or modern for the past 15 years and have never used an Oliver. I am not sure how to use the hydrapower, and I am sure I will have more questions when the tractor gets here. I plan on ordering an operators manual, but if anyone has any suggestions about how to get along with this tractor and anything to watch out for I would appriciate it. Sorry this is so long. Thanks, and thanks for all the answers to previous questions.

Check your fuel filters, if they are dirty this will cause it to skip or miss at high rpm If that dont appear to be a problem check your air cleaner filter. Also the inlet pipe on the air system, sometimes i have seen them half plugged with crap. If all that appears good, than maybe you fuel pump is getting week. My 1600 use to miss at high rpms and in the end that was what the problem was, a weak and wore out fuel pump Hope this might help ya Bob

I had two diesel 1650s once, you should have bought the 170 Allis. Would have saved you alot of future headaches.

I looked at the 170. It was garbage. A gear jumping worn out old nag.

Too bad the 170 wasn't taken care of because they are an excellent tractor. Hope you have better luck than I with the 1650D. Besides very hard starting mine also had very jerky hydraulics and were a little too tall for loader work which is what I used one for. Each one also took a turn at blowing the head gasket and each took out the over/under or what it was called. One tore out the PTO clutch and both had the rear wheel hubs replaced. I bought one new in 1966 and the other used in 1967. Those are some of the problems I had with mine so that is why I wish you luck. I traded them for a 7030 in 1973 and have never been sorry.

Yeah, it is a shame about that 170. I grew up on a 200 with a loader which I always thought was a great tractor, except that it also jumped gear. I think I have decided not to put a loader on this 1650 just because it is too big for a loader tractor for me. I think in a couple of years I will try to get something smaller to put a loader on. A friend has a D15 which I really like so I may try for something that size. The 1650 seems a little too big to manuever around my outbuildings where I would need the loader. The same friend has a bobcat that he lets me use which is actually ideal for my loader needs, but they are no good for raking hay

Hi Pete, I think you will be happy with the tractor. First I have a 1655D and will speak from that experience. It was a bit of a hard starter also. In winter temps below 40 always seemed to need a shot of either. What I found that helped was the previous owner had put 2 12v bateries in it and did not wire them in to get full benifit from both. I replaced them with 2 6v wired in series and made a lot of difference in starting. I will never crank one more than 10 seconds at a time as those starters are expensive. I always use the pre heat when the engine is cold started. I doubt the pump TIMING is the cause of the miss but I have been wrong before. It could be caused by a number of things but I would first put a good additive in the fuel that lubes the pump seals as well as cleans the injectors and see if after a few hours it still misses. You did not say how many hours the tractor had.

The hour meter is broken at 4500, so it has at least that. The guy I bought it from just dropped it off. It seems like a real nice tractor. It is my first diesel engine, so I am like a babe in the woods. I am not even sure of what all I am looking at. What are the 3 plastic nobs and the steel button for on the dash? I am getting ready to order an owners manual for it which ought to shed some light

Pete,
You'll be fine with the 1650. The 3 nobs you're asking about are likely the fuses for the lights, gauges, and hydra-lectric, if so equipped. Push in and twist to the left to pop them out if needed. The button could be the manifold air pre-heater, if so equipped. Do not use both either and the manifold pre-heater, use one or the other when cold. Their worst habit is hard starting when cold as mentioned in other posts. If it has an AC/110-volt type plug in heater for winter use, that's the best ticket to starting when you need it.
As for the Hydra-Power drive, that's a 2-speed auxiliary transmission that gives you 2 ranges in each gear and can be shifted any time without clutching. Be careful as it free-wheels in low range, meaning it doesn't hold back going down a hill--keep it in direct drive.
I would also suggest a parts manual if you can do it. The Floyd County Iowa Historical society has them, you may want to give them your serial number, which is on the plate under the dash by the steering tilt pedal. From this you can tell the year built, probably 1965 to 1968 range. Good luck. dwm
