1850 at sale and I need advise

Okay, What would you look for and how much would you bid? An 1850 gas wide front with cab. They just got it started today, the sale is on Sat. The story is the guy bought this tractor, didnt like all the noise in the cab, so he didnt like the tractor, pulled it in the shed and parked it. Yesterday they pulled it out and today was the first day it has run since 1974. The first comp check showed nothing on 3 cylinders so the old mech they hired to work on them in the yard before the sale, pulled the valve cover and got all of the valves broke free and this afternoon it actually sounded real good. The meter shows 4000+ hours. The water in the motor still looks like new antifreeze, the sheet metal is straight, and the rubber even looks decent. I dont know what kind of cab it is. Did Oliver put on a factory cab? What problems are going to develop from sitting for 28 years? What is a safe priceto go with these questions? Thanks guys!

Chip -
I wouldn't go over $2k for it if it has been sitting that long. Sounds as if they may have forced it to start and who knows what may have happened to the internals. I would check it out REAL GOOD cause like everyone else said, story sounds "fishy." BUYER BEWARE

If you don't get it where is located? I have been looking for a fixer upper 1850 gas or dsl or a 1650 utility as a stable mate for my 550. I am stuck down here in JD land and the only other Oliver I knew of got sold and went to OH (real clean Super 99).

Let us know what happens.

they will bring 1500 for parts the story about 10 gallons an hour is not true we have ran 1850 gas for years and many times made 4020 deere lovers sick by how little fuel we use compare 4020 404 cu 1850 310 now common sense tells you which uses the most fuel in fact we now run lp and will run with any tractor size for size in dollar fuel use per day

I saw two 4020s parked inthe weeds this week! One had the front axle broke out the had a PS trans,(probally out and too expensive too repair)! Theres another one about 5-6 miles from here that has been behind the guy's barn for several years. I can believe the story of parking the tractor even though 4000 hrs is alot for 6-8 yrs use. People do crazy things sometimes. I bought a '74 Ford semi two years ago, it had been sitting since 1982. The old guy bought it to haul his own grain and then found out how much plates and insurance cost and said he would'nt pay it and parked it in the woods. WB.

There's also a tendency to just park your "mistakes"- those deals that turn our poorly, and you're going to lose money when you sell. Whether from self-pride, or a spouse that will never let you hear the end of it. You don't realize the loss until you sell, so just don't sell!

if you have so much faith in that green paint bring it down and we will run 4 hours whoever runs the least dollars in fuel will win the others tractor of course i do not know why i would run a 4020 but they do sell good here i have not a had a john deere taker yet guess they only work well on the internet

Lets do the competition!! I'll go to my John Deere dealer and see if they have a part ON HAND for my 4020, or if they can get it in 2 days.

You go to your Oliver dealer and see if they have a part ON HAND for your Oliver or can get it in 2 days. ooPPPsss!!!!! Thats right!!!! There are no Oliver dealers.

Now i know what your all going to tell me. I'll pay so much for a part from John Deere. I know better! I had Olivers. IH, MF,MM lots of NH The price is the same, and sometimes less at John Deere then at the rest, and the best part. I can get the part when i really need it. Lets see you do that with your Olivers. I know how they are. It takes them 2 or 3 weeks!

i get my parts in the same time for oliver as i do my deeres but i farm for profit and that means saving fuel it is nice to see the new green paint i get a lot of bargains when they sell them out

I've sure seen lots of 4020's parked at dealerships cause they want way too much for them. I dont see why they are so special, cause they are just another tractor.

A 1850(late 60's tractor) been sitting since 1974"? That line about not liking the cab noise so he parked it has to be a complete line of B.S. It already had 4K hours on it in 74'? I have a hard time believing the pistons weren't locked up either.
Something is definatly wrong with it. A 1850 gas will burn 10 gallons a hour plowing. That's 12.50 an hour @ 1.25 a gallon.
I would say $1,000 tops.

Don't say it's BS. I've started a rebuild on a 995 lug-o-matic that sat in the back of my uncle's shed since 1968! Why, you ask? Because he bought a new Oliver and just never felt the need to rattle his eardrums any more. And an 1850 isn't going to burn 10 GPH no how or way. My dad had both 1800 and 1850 gas Oliver's (The only non-diesel tractors he ever had. Go figure!)and both used 4 to 4.5 GPH chisel plowing and discing (I checked) Also, I remember some of those aftermarket cabs sounded like you were sitting inside of a Kettle drum!!!

We had a 1750 Cockshutt with a cab probably quite similar, and it was very noisy.
