Coupler Chain Question

On a 1850 diesel with Hydra-Power drive, how much slack should there be in the coupling chain? Mine seems to have alot of slack at the bottom and I feel it is too loose. I've had no problems with it coming off, yet.

There is some slack in these chains, but not excessive. Sometimes one of the sprockets get a little loose and makes the chain feel a lot looser than it is. You can tighten the sprocket on the hydra power side with a nut but the transmission side there isnt much you can do except replace the sprocket. The 1850's really seem to have more of a problem with the sprocket on the transmission side chewing into the transmission input shaft and causing some play there allowing the sprocket to droop and allow the chain to be loose.

I guess my thought on this is to keep the engine lined up with the transmission as close as possible and run it till the chain comes off or looks like it will. If you can pull the chain up and see more than half the roller out of the sprocket I might replace the chain, AgCo dealer here has them for about $55 and see if that helps. When you have the chain off you can move the sprockets around and see how loose they are. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Shep. The chain appears to be original, so it probably needs replacing anyway. The sprockets look to be aligned, pretty well, but I'll check them again.

Never try to tighten the nut on a hydra-power. The nut is staked to the shaft and will tear up the threads the only 100% safe way to remove the nut is to cut the nut at the keyway and part way through the nut opposite the keyway. Then bend the nut so it will come off. You can tighten a nut on a over-under trans. If the chain is worn that much you probably need new sprockets.
