Since my Dad past away in 1997 I have become interested in Oliver tractors because I grew up with several on the farm in North Dakota. I have heard of an 880 for sale and was wondering what I should look for in this tractor and an approximate value here in North Dakota. Did they have 3-point, live pto, horsepower, options available, years built, etc are some of my questions at this time. When growing up we had a 77, Super 88 Standard, 770, 88 Row Crop, 1655, then an 1850.

Starting at the front, I'd check for play in the spindles. Hopefully you know what to look for as far as the engine is concerned (noise, leaks, cracks). I'd try to get load to all the gears to see if any are noisey. Also listen to make sure the rear axle bearings and final drive don't make any unusual noise. Then check the operation of the pto, power booster, and 3 pt (if equipped). Also, brakes, tires, and electronics are a plus. Pertty much the same things to check out on most other tractors. I'm not from your area, but would imagine an 880 would go for between 1500-3500 depending on condition and options. Of coarse a restored tractor could bring more. The best thing you can probably do is to get on the unit and drive it. If the seller has something to pull, like a disc or something, I'd ask if you could hook it up and get some load to it so any noises in the drive line will come to light.
