Head Troubles?

One of the 1850D's has been spitting out anti freeze in the morning about 2 minutes after starting. Once warmed up I can add 2-3gallons and the tractor runs fine all day spitting out a cup or every hour or so. The next morning the whole process repeats itself. I replaced the head gasket last winter and I am now leaning towards a cracked head. Could there be another cause? Can a cracked head be repaired or do I have a new boat anchor?

There is a place in Evansville, Indiana that does block and head repair and modifications. I do not remember the name of the place but they are right next door to Redi-Strip. You might give Redi-Strip and call and ask them for the name.

Hi Dave--
When you have the head off check the sleeves closely for cracks. I have seen them crack slightly right below the top land and they leak compression into the water jacket. Mike--

I did look for cracks when I did the head gasket and but did not see anything. I have also tried some leak stop type products but did not have any luck.

I wouldn't think a diesel could get hot enough in 2 minutes to push any water anywhere unless you were blowing compression into the cooling system.

If you replaced the head gasket I am guessing you had a blown head gasket at some point. If it got hot at some point you could have a warped head. Have it planned and pressure tested or magna fluxed.

You will get mixed opinions on the head welding but, when I was a kid about 30 years ago remember my dad coming in the house with an arm full of insulation. He opened the stove and removed and 88 diesel head and took it outside and welded the crack. Peened it a little. Welded a little with nickel rod. Peened it some more and so fourth. Told the owner to have it planed off and it never had another problem. This may be the exception.

You probably know this but, I'm bored and feel like typing.

When I tork a head I clean all threads, oil them and pull them down to 75 percent, then 90 percent then the actual spec. Then I back them off 1/4 turn and go back to spec, they usuall go well past the 1/4 point. After the engine has been ran and cooled several time I retork for the last time.

I have not retorqed the head yet but I will soon as I have a rather messy leak on the Valve cover.
Thanks for the recommendations. I will add this to my file of usefuls tricks.

If the head gasket is where the leak is coming from retorqing may not help now that it has already started but it won't cost anything to try.

Usually a crack will blow out right away, but not allways. You could have a bad impeller in the water pump,or a plugged raditor,or some other restriction. One time I found a thermostat that would open and then partialy block the flow.

Well I did try another Rad out of a different tractor and nothing changed. I even ran w/o the thermostat to see if that helped...NOT. The water pump comment has me curious though. I have only replaced pumps when they leak out of the weep hole. The glycol that is displaced in the first 10 minutes is cold and Once tyhe temperature builds up I can release the cap and get only hot air escaping. I add fluid after the pressure has subsided and the tractor runs like a top, as if the crack or bad seal closes once up to temperature. I have a rebuilt head from a parts tractor I bought this summer that has only 300 hours on it before the bottom end gave up so I will swap heads if nothing else and see what happens.
