I attended and really enjoyed my first HPOCA meet in Cedar Falls a few weeks ago, but I came away with more questions regarding a 550 that I have. It's serial # is 117541 which makes it perhaps a mid-year 1962. This tractor has a later model hood (no side indentation for the Oliver logo) and a fiberglass checkerboard grill. Mr. Larry Gay's book "A Guide to Hart-Parr, Oliver ..... " p 42 states: "For the 1963 model year the 550 changed to a checkerboard style of grill"
Do any of you know when Oliver would introduce it's "model year"? How can I tell if this tractor should really have the metal grill and the indented hood?
I have had a 1967 550 for over 25 years and bought this '62 with my brain on dumb-lock. I've got way too much money in it, yet there is that side of me pushing to "make-it-right!"
Appreciate any guidance you board members can offer.
Thanks,
Barry-KC

To Myron KY - Thanks for the info
Boy! Did I screw up! I was reading the "start" serial numbers for 1962 and '63 and did not type in the number for my 550 which is 121433.
However, I like your idea of justifying to the wife.
... Just have to buy more 550's until the magic number turns up!!!!

Hi Barry. I don't know about the grill and hood but according to the serial number page, here at YTmag, your 550 S/N 117541 was the first in '62. Here's a link

550 Serial Numbers

This list may not be accurate but I thought it was interesting your serial number was first in '62. Perhaps you can use this list to justify cost with the wife.

"But Honey, it's the first one off the line in 1962. A real collectors item!!!!" ";^)
