Is it safe to drive Super 55 with broken driving plates on PTO clutch??

I am going to be Splitting my Super 55 to replace the broken driving plates in my PTO clutch and perhaps a seal or two.. My problem is that I need to get it to my dad's garage to work on it... seven miles away. As long as I make sure the clutch is disengaged and I my gear oil is full is it safe to drive there??? I did drive it to where it is parked now without issue.. but that was only a few hundred feet. I don't have a way to haul it and it is expensive to pay a towing company to flatbed it. ( I have driven it there and back many times prior to the PTO issue)

Speaking of nice drives, my wife and I just got back from a 100 mile ride on Grandpa's 60. It had been on blocks in my uncle's shed for 32 years untill June of this year. The farther we went, the better it ran. Purred like a sewing machine the whole trip.

I drove my from Cortland, Ny to Genoa, Ny approx. 30 miles without a hitch. It was quite a peacefull trip actually.

There must be a rash of 550 pto's going out this summer! When I took mine in to my nephew for repair, another man was dropping off his 550 with the same problem! Dog Point Screw had backed out on both of them!

I don't know for sure the answer to your question. My nephew told me to drive mine as little as possible until I got it split. Like you I was a distance from the workshop, but only about 1 1/2 miles. I did drive it but did not have anything attached to the pto shaft--so hopefully the pto plates just freewheeled. Enough damage was already accomplished from the bent/broken link in the "over-center" assembly.

If you're doing your own repair, be sure to get the two piece dog point/set/locking screw to secure the plate assembly to the pto shaft. Also, my nephew told me to coat those screw parts with locktite or at least finger nail polish to make them hold in place.

If plates are the only problem which requires replacement there is no problem, these plates when old and oil soaked and mis-adjusted self destruct, the hub is held in place by the brass release collar. When replacing the set screws make sure the tip of the first set screw bottoms in the recess in the driven spline shaft. The fiber plates can be found on this site at 1/2 price of AGCO.[under White]
