Help with brakes

I think I've already talked myself into the fix for this problem, but wanted to run it past you folks to see if I've missed something. I've noticed on a number of 00 and 50 series tractors in particular, but most recently on my 1950-T, that brake noise and jerky operation can be a frequent problem. Many times, replacing the actuating disk retainer springs that become weak with age or heat cures the problem, but on this 1950-T, I tried that on both sides and one side continues to make an awful squeak and provides jerky brake actuation while the other is as smooth as can be. I have even tried coating the actuating disk balls with a moly grease which didn't affect anything. I guess the only thing left is to replace the disks, but they appear to be in good enough shape, unless heat and/or oil can ruin them? Anybody have any experience? Unless advised otherwise, I guess I'll replace all 3 brake disks, with new. Not exactly cheap. Appreciate any suggestions or past experience.

I fought round and round with this problem on that 1650 I had. I think I may have told you this but I actualy replaced the acuators compleat with ones I knew worked in anoter tractor and new disks from agco with no change. What I finaly did is take the out side cover to a machene shop and had it surfaced helped alot. The cover and housing had become worn enuff that I think the actuator had to go too far even with the new disks. even after that I still had trouble after the tractor got wet or fog. cleared up with use but got real irritating to have to back up to release the brakes all the time. good luck.

I think it has as much to do with the actuators as anything. I know they don't take kindly to sitting still for weeks at a time. I ususally take them apart once a year or so and polish the balls and sockets on a wire wheel. Replacing the springs as you mentioned also helps I'm sure, I've never done that. You did not mention it, but I always put a coat of RTV/silicone on the outer plate where it contacts the housing to prevent water from getting in. The later tractors had shims at this point to provide an alternate way of tightening the brakes (by removing shims) so that the actuators would not have to be adjusted down so tight when the disks wore down. Don't know if the disks were thicker, or the machining on the contact surfaces inside was different on this setup. Good luck.

We have had real good success with Hi-Capacity brand brake disc for being smooth and quite. Something to do with the type of brake material.
